4. BATTERY MAINTENANCE AND CHARGING

4.1. Safety regulations for handling acid batteries

Park the truck safely before carrying out any work on the batteries.
Maintenance personnel:
Batteries may only be charged, serviced or replaced by trained personnel. This operator
manual and the manufacturer's instructions regarding batteries and charging stations
must be observed when carrying out the work.
Fire protection:
- Smoking and naked flames must be avoided when working with batteries.
- When a truck is parked for charging, there should be no flammable material or operating
fluids which could create sparks within 2 metres of the truck.
- The area must be well ventilated.
- Fire protection equipment must be provided.
Protection against electric shock:
- Batteries have a high voltage and store high levels of energy.
- Do not short circuit batteries.
- Do not apply tools which could cause a spark to the two battery terminals.

4.2. Battery type and dimensions

Battery type and dimensions are as follows:

When replacing or installing batteries, ensure that the battery is correctly secured in the
battery compartment of the truck.

4.3. Charging the battery

Safety regulations for charging the battery
- To charge the battery, the truck must be parked in a secure, well-ventilated room. When
charging, the tops of the battery cells must be exposed to provide sufficient ventilation.
- Do not place any metal objects on the battery.
- Before charging, check all cables and plug connections for visible signs of damage.
- Before beginning and completing the charging process, ensure the power is turned to OFF.
- Safety regulations from the battery and charging station manufacturers must be followed.
Charging step
- Check whether the condition complies with «Safety regulations for charging the battery».
- Park the truck safely (see section 3.2.4: Parking the truck safely).
- Remove the battery plug (1).
- Connect the battery plug (1) using the charging lead of the stationary charger and switch
on the charger.

4.4. Battery removal and installation

Park the truck safely (see 3.2.4: Parking the truck safely) and switch off the power before
removing and installing the battery.
Battery removal and installation steps:
A170148 (EPT20-15HJ)
a. Lift the forks by moving the control shaft (1) up and down to the highest point. Then
rotate the control shaft (1) a few degrees to the left or right.
b. Remove the two screws (2) before removing the cover (3).
c. Remove the wire harness and battery cable. Remove the battery (4).
WARNING !
Ensure that the cables are positioned correctly to avoid damage when removing and ins-
talling the battery.
The battery is installed by reversing the order of the removal instructions. Pay careful at-
tention to the cable connection and the position of the battery. Ensure that the cables are
positioned correctly to avoid damage when removing and installing the battery.
A170149 (EPT20-15ET)
a. Remove two screws (1), and remove the cover.
b. Remove four screws (2).
c. Remove the three battery cables (3) as shown in the illustration.
d. Move the rotary operating handle (4) as far as it will go.
e. Pull the electrical panel (5) out a little.
f. Turn the electrical panel (5) in the direction shown in the illustration until the battery is
fully exposed.
g. Loosen the battery clamp screws. Insert battery (6) or remove battery (6).
Reverse the order of operations to complete installation. Please pay particular attention to
the battery installation position and the cable connection. Please ensure that the cables
are positioned correctly to avoid being damaged as you remove and install the battery.
