2. removing the tube
PreCAUtiOnS
Accessories such as a tracheostoma valve or HMe (Heat Moisture exchanger) must be removed first before proceeding to remove the
Fahl
tracheostomy tube.

CAUtiOn
if the tracheostoma is unstable, or in emergency situations (puncture/dilation tracheostomy), the tracheostoma can collapse after with-
drawal of the tracheostomy tube, thereby impairing air supply. A fresh tracheostomy tube must be kept ready for use in such cases and
must be quickly inserted if necessary. A tracheal dilator can be used for temporarily securing the air supply.
Proceed very carefully to avoid injury to the mucus membranes.
the tube must always be cleaned and, if necessary, disinfected as follows before re-inserting according to the instructions provided below.
Step-by-step instructions to remove the Fahl
the tracheostomy tubes should be removed with the head slightly tilted back. to remove the tube, grip the tube at the side by the neck
flange / the housing (see picture 7).
Carefully remove the tracheostomy tubes.
in the case of the silver tracheostomy tubes, the inner cannulas are held in place in the outer cannula by means of a lever. to remove the
inner cannula, this lever must be turned sideways.
reinsertion of the inner cannula is performed in reverse sequence as described above.
iX. Cleaning and Disinfection
PreCAUtiOnS
For reasons of hygiene and to avoid the risk of infection, you should thoroughly clean the Fahl
more often during heavier secretion production.
CAUtiOn
the tracheostomy tubes must not be cleaned using a dishwasher, a steam cooker, a microwave oven, a washing machine or similar appli-
ances!
Keep this in mind, your personal cleaning schedule, including additional disinfection if required, must always be determined in consulta-
tion with your doctor/physician and according to your individual needs.
regular disinfection is only required if this is indicated from the medical point of view as ordered by the doctor/physician. the reason for
this is that the upper airways are not free of microbes in healthy patients either.
General cleaning may be insufficient to meet the special hygiene requirements to prevent infections for patients with specific problems
(e.g. MrSA, OrSA etc.), who are subject to an increased danger of re-infection. We recommend chemical disinfection of the tubes
according to the instructions provided below. Please consult your doctor/physician.
CAUtiOn
Cleaning agent and disinfectant residues on the tracheostomy tube can lead to irritations of the mucus membranes or other health impair-
ments.
tracheostomy tubes are considered as belonging to the category of instruments with hollow cavities. Special care must therefore be tak-
en when performing cleaning or disinfection that the tube is fully wetted with the solution used and is unobstructed (see picture 8).
the solutions used for cleaning and disinfection must be freshly prepared prior to each use.
1. Cleaning
Fahl
tracheostomy tubes must be cleaned / replaced regularly in accordance with the individual patient's needs.
®
Only use cleaning agents if the tube is outside the tracheostoma.
A mild, pH-neutral washing lotion can be used for cleaning the tube. We recommend using the special cannula-cleaning powder (reF
31100) as directed by the manufacturer.
never clean the Fahl
hold cleaners, detergents, high-concentration alcohol or denture cleaners.
this may be very hazardous to health. the tube may also be destroyed or damaged.
Depending on the individual needs of the patient, which must be determined by the treating physician, it may be necessary to immerse
the tracheostomy tube in boiling water (212 degrees Fahrenheit/100 degrees Celsius) for at least 5 minutes but not more than 10 min-
utes.
WArninG
Allow the tube to cool down before inserting it again to avoid scalds and burns.
tracheostomy tubes made of sterling silver may become tarnished over time due to the material properties, showing dark discolouration.
this natural process can be counteracted with the aid of a silver immersion bath. For this purpose, immerse the tarnished silver tra-
cheostomy tubes in the bath for approx. 4-8 minutes. Observe the manufacturer's instructions when doing this. rinse the tube thorough-
ly with water afterwards and apply a little stoma oil if necessary after drying.
the silver tracheostomy tubes should not be placed in physiological saline solution, as discolourations (silver chloride) can form after
longer contact.
