Basic troubleshooting of a minidisc deck is
similar to troubleshooting of any other
electrical or electronic equipment. Always
check the most obvious possible causes
first. To give you a few ideas of what to look
for, check the following:
System Restrictions
Because of the different recording systems
used by Compact Cassette, DAT, etc., the
MD (Mini Disc) is subjected to some system
restrictions. These restrictions may result in
the following problems. These are normal
and are not malfunctions.
"Disc Full" is displayed before the available
recording time (max. 60 or 74 minutes)
expires.
® "Disc Full" is displayed whenever the
number of allowable tracks is reached,
regardless of the recording time still
available. With the MD system, it is not
possible to record more than 255
tracks. If you want to record more
tracks, erase unnecessary tracks,
record them on another MD, or use the
editing procedure to combine existing
tracks.
"Disc Full" is displayed even though both
the number of tracks and the recording time
have not been filled.
® Whenever emphasis data or other
signal enhancements are switched on-
off in the middle of tracks, the track is
separated at that point and "Disc Full"
may be displayed regardless of the
recording time and number of tracks.
The remaining recording time of an MD does
not increase although several tracks have
been erased.
® The remaining recording time display
ignores tracks shorter than 12
seconds. Therefore, the time may not
increase even if you have erased
several short tracks.
The total elapsed recording time and
remaining recording time does not coincide
with the available recording time (max. 60
or 74 minutes).
Operation to reset
The microprocessor may fall into malfunction (impossibility to operate erroneous display,
etc.) when the power cord is unplugged while power is ON or due to an external factor. In
this case, execute the following procedure to reset the microprocessor and return it to
normal condition.
With the POWER switch left to ON, unplug the power cord from the power outlet. Then,
while holding the eject (ø) button depressed, plug the power cord again.
... Please note that resetting the microprocessor clears the contents stored in, it returns
the microprocessor to the condition when it left the factory.

In case of difficulty
® The minimum unit for recording data is
usually the cluster (approx. 2 seconds).
Data of less than 2 seconds still uses
the 2-second space, so actual
available recording time becomes
shorter than rated. Also, if the MD is
scratched, the scratched sections are
automatically deleted and the time
available is decreased accordingly.
Tracks cannot be combined.
® Tracks created by other editing
operations sometimes cannot be
combined.
Audio is interrupted during search.
® When a track created by an editing
operation is searched, audio is
sometimes interrupted.
Track numbers are not assigned correctly.
® When a CD is recorded through a
digital connection, short tracks may be
recorded depending on the contents of
the CD. Also, when auto track marking
is performed, the track numbers may
not be assigned correctly in some
cases.
Note the following when you attempt to
perform
recording
while
(overwriting) the previous recording:
... The remaining recording time of MD
may not be displayed correctly.
... After repeated overwrite operations, it
might be impossible to overwrite
recording. In this case, first edit the
previous recording (by erasing tracks,
etc.) then proceed to the overwrite
operation.
... The remaining recording time is
shorter after recording than it was
before recording.
... The overwrite operation is not
recommended if the track to be
overwritten contains noise. Since
recording is performed on a per-
cluster basis (approx. 2 seconds),
overwriting a noisy track may alter the
length of the track.
... It is not possible to assign a track title
during overwrite recording.
... Displayed time information may not be
correct with monaural discs.

NO DISC
® Disc is not loaded. Load a disc.
001 UNLOCK
® The digital cord or optical fiber cable is
not locked in position or connected
incompletely (or not connected).
001 SCMS ON
® An attempt is made to record digital
signal from a source while its digital
copy has been prohibited by SCMS.
Use analog recording.
001 Not Audio
® The digital signal being input is not an
audio signal. Use analog recording.
DISC FULL
® There is no recordable area on the
disc. Use another recordable disc.
® An attempt is made to record a 256th
track. More than 255 tracks cannot be
recorded per disc.
TITLE FULL
® An attempt is made to assign a title
with more characters than usable.
Refer to "Total number of title
erasing
characters".
BLANK DISC
® The disc does not contain any
recordings.
NO TRACKS
® The disc does not contain any tracks
but has a disc title. The disc can be
used for recording without any
problem.
READING
® The data of the disc is being read.
WRITING
® The data related to editing or recording
is being written in the disc.
DISC ERROR
® The data of the disc is abnormal. Erase
all tracks by executing ERASE ALL. If
you cannot, use another Mini Disc.
EDIT NOW!
® The editing operation is in progress.
CAN'T EDIT
® An attempt is made to perform editing
beyond the restrictions, such as
erasing a track which is too short.
ok? (blinking)
® This is a message for confirming if
editing can really be executed. Press
the YES button to execute editing.
PROTECTED
® The Mini Disc is in the "RECORD
PROTECT" condition. Release the
"RECORD PROTECT" condition.
PLAY ONLY
® A playback-only Mini Disc is loaded
.Load a recordable Mini Disc.
