12.2 The cardio-biphasic shock pulse

Specifications
The cardio-biphasic shock pulse is characterized by limita-
tion of the maximum current. The risk of myocardial dama-
ge, usually caused by excessively high electrical currents, in
particular at low patient impedances, is considerably redu-
ced.
Functional principle
If the current exceeds the specified nominal value, the sup-
ply of current is interrupted. Inductance in the conductive
path means that current continues to flow to the patient,
but gradually falls. If the current drops below the specified
value by more than one ampere, the current supply is
switched back on. The current flowing to the patient ac-
cordingly rises again. A saw tooth-type pulse forms.

The relationship of electrical charge delivered (integral of
current over time) between the second (negative) and first
(positive) phase averages 0.38.
