Procedure
1. Have an assistant sit in the vehicle and when instructed, turn the key to the run position, without
starting the engine. Hold the gauge so that you can clearly see the dial and note the initial
reading of the gauge dial when the key is turned on and the pump starts to run. The initial
pressure reading of me dial reflects the amount of residual charge of the nitrogen on the top of
the bladder of the accumulator. A reading of approximately 1100 psi is common if the system is
operating correctly.
2. Note the pump run time from key on to pump stop. Normal pump run time to completely charge
the accumulator is 45-60 seconds Also note the system pressure shown on the gauge when the
pump stops. The pressure should be in the 2500 psi range for most units.
3. With the key still on, depress the brake pedal with normal pressure (as if you were stopping the
car from 30 mph). Do this 2-3 time and note the amount of pressure drop on each application,
Normal pressure drop per application is approximately 100-150 psi After 2-3 pedal applications,
the pump will start and run to reestablish system pressure The pressure at the time the pump
restarts should be approximately 1100-1200 psi. Normal pump run time to recharge the system
from these 2-3 pedal applications is 6-8 second, The pressure reading on the gauge when the
pump shuts down should match the pressure reading of the first check.
4. With the key still on, check to see if the system pressure holds. There should be little if any
pressure drop over a two minute tune span. If the pressure drops noticeably or if the pressure
drops to cause the pump to start and run within two minutes, there is an internal by-passing leak
in me unit.
5. OE instructions state to replace the O-ring whenever the accumulator has been removed and is
being reinstalled in the vehicle. Install a new 0-ring and reinstall the accumulator to the master
cylinder and tighten to the correct specifications.
6. Turn the key off. Pump the pedal 20-30 times until the pedal becomes rock hard. Pump the pedal
an additional 5 times. Hold the adapter and unscrew the accumulator from the adapter Check the
bottom of the accumulator for the O-ring and the condition of the O-ring. Unscrew the gauge from
the adapter and unscrew the adaptor from the master cylinder. Check the O-ring at the bottom of
the adaptor.
7. Follow the instructions on the side of the master cylinder reservoir to check the fluid level. GM
checks their TEVES II master cylinders with the accumulator discharged (key off and accumulator
discharged) and Ford checks their TEVES II units with the accumulator discharged (key on and
accumulator pressurized).
