For your Safety
1.4 Rules for Operation
The installation and operation of grease separators is subject to legal requirements and
regional regulations (e.g. respective local by-laws). Please contact the respective authorities
for more information. The following norms serve as a guideline. They are to be supplemented
and checked to ensure that they are up-to-date.
DIN 4040-100: Grease separator systems – Part 100: Requirements for the use of
■
grease separators according to EN 1825-1 and EN 1825-2
EN 1825-1: Grease separator systems – Part 1: Principles for design, performance and
■
testing, marking and quality control
EN 1825-2 Grease separator systems – Part 2: Selection of nominal size, installation,
■
operation and maintenance
EN 1717: Protection of drinking water against pollution in drinking water installations and
■
general requirements for safety devices to prevent drinking water pollution by means of
backflows
DIN 1988: Technical regulations for drinking water installations – Part 100: Protection of
■
drinking water, maintaining drinking water quality
DIN 1986-100: Drainage systems for land and buildings – Part 100: Provisions in
■
conjunction with EN 752 and EN 12056
EN 752: Drainage systems outside buildings
■
EN 12056 (series of standards): Gravity drainage systems inside buildings
■
Examples from the standards listed:
Taking samples: When installing a grease separator, a facility for taking samples and for
■
inspections is to be provided for direct on the discharge of the grease separator and
prior to any mixing with other waste water, e.g.in the form of a shaft or a sampling pipe.
Samples are to be taken by qualified staff from flowing discharge water in the grease
separator.
Disposal: The sludge trap and grease separator must be emptied and cleaned at least
■
once a month. The grease filter must then be refilled with water (e.g. drinking water,
process water or purified water from the grease separator system) in compliance with
local disposal regulations.
General inspection: Before initial operation and subsequently every five years after having
■
being completely emptied and cleaned, the good condition and proper operation of the
grease separator are to be checked by a professional.
Operating logbook: The operator of each grease separator is to maintain an operating
■
logbook and present it to the relevant supervisory authority upon request.
Operating logbooks are available from ACO Service,
