The DVD - Digital Versatile Disc - is a digital storage medium for
information. DVDs are indicated by the symbol adjacent.
Depending on how the information is stored, different DVD types have
different storage capacities.
DVD structure
Video DVDs are divided into titles and chapters. A DVD can have several
titles, which can each consist of several chapters. Titles and chapters are
both incrementally numbered:
Normally the first title of a DVD consists of licence and supplier
information. The next title is usually the film itself. Further titles may
consist of e. g. "Making-of" documentaries, film previews or information
on the actors.
DVDs can store up to eight spoken languages and subtitles in up to 32
languages. When playing back, the languages of speech and of the
subtitles may be combined as desired.
On some DVDs, even the angle of viewing can be changed, as long as the
film was made with different camera positions.
Regional codes
Because of the worldwide marketing strategies for DVDs, a code was
developed for them which allows them to be played only on players
purchased in certain parts of the world.
This code is based on a system which divides the world into six
regions. Europe belongs to zone 2. Therefore on your DVD
player, only DVDs can be played which have regional code 2. The
regional code is printed on the packaging of the DVD (see the logo
adjacent).
Other than DVDs with regional code 2, only DVDs with regional code 0
(suitable for every DVD-Player) can be played on your unit.
If problems occur with a given DVD, check that it has regional code
2 or 0.
