bark, rotten parts, branches, splintered surfaces of poles and
others can significantly deteriorate the connection between
gaff and wood.
The product must be used at the site of operation only.
Walking or running with the product connected to the boots
may cause damages, blunt gaff and lead to slips trips or falls.
Use original EDELRID spare parts only! Do not paint, cover with
stickers, coat or apply any other modifications to the product.
The product shall only be used in combination with other PPE,
such as harness, helmet, gloves, safety-goggles, positioning-lan-
yard etc.
Using the equipment around mashines with turning parts or
electric hazards might cause danger! Straps and loose items
could get caught and the metallic parts are electric conductors.
Sharp Edges and abrasive surfaces can damage the webbings
or lead to high wear.
In rescue situations, to free the casualty from the climbers, the
rescuer should cut the fastening webbings as shown in fig. 20.
NOTES CONCERNING SERVICE LIFE AND MAINTENANCE
Climate during use:
The temperature range for continuous use of the product (in
dry conditions) is approx. -20 °C to +40 °C (-4 °F to 104 °F).
Service life and replacement:
The service life of the product mainly depends on the type and
frequency of use as well as in external influences. Products
made of artificial fibers (polyamide or polyester, Dyneema
Aramid) are subject to some aging even if not used. Aging
mainly depends on ultraviolet radiation as well as on climatic
conditions. When the climber becomes worn out beyond repair
(to be checked with the Gaff and Leg iron stirrup Gauge) or
reaches the end of its maximum service life, the product should
be retired from use.
Maximum service life:
- At optimum storage conditions (see Storage) if unused: Plastic
parts: 12 years, Metal parts: unlimited, Textile parts: 10 years.
- For infrequent use: without detectable wear, proper use and
at optimum storage conditions: 6 years.
- For or extreme use: without detectable wear, proper use and
at optimum storage conditions: 2 years.
- In any case the Maximum service life of the product is not
indicative nor a guarantee of the status of the product itself
and cannot replace regular product inspections.
INSPECTION OF THE PRODUCT
The following mandatory checks have to be done before and
after each use of the product.
- No Damages, cracks, rust, sharp edges or burrs on the leg iron.
- No Damages, cracks, rust, deformation, length and sharpness
of the gaffs.
- Gaffs are securely attached to the leg iron using appropriate
hardware.
- No Rust, damages and correct tightening torque of the screws.
- No Cuts, holes, burning damages or other signs of extensive
use of the straps.
- No chemical contact with straps.
- No dirt on the velcro parts. Always check of the Velcro and
their function. If Velcro is not effective anymore, replace the
old part with new spare parts immediately.
- No Cracks, bleached areas or other damages to the plastic parts.

If there appears one or more of the mentioned damages or any
other serious problem with the product or one of its parts, it has
to be replaced immediately.
Upon damage, the product should immediately be removed
from service and must be presented to the manufacturer for
inspection or repair.
