Introduction
Dear Patient. Please note that this information brochure has been prepared for the Ottobock products Sen-
sorHand Speed and MyoHand VariPlus Speed. For clear distinction, the chapter headings therefore contain
the respective product names. Only start up the product in accordance with the information contained in the
accompanying documents supplied.
SensorHand Speed with SUVA*-Sensor Technology
During the fitting, your prosthetist considered six control modes to select one most suitable for your specific
requirements. All six control modes are described in the appendix with examples.
To help you learn how the SensorHand Speed works, this booklet summarises the basic features, based on
the most common type of control, DMC or Dynamic Mode Control:
• You can control your hand's opening or closing speed based on the strength of your muscle contraction.
This makes gripping easy and very natural.
• When you hold an object in the SensorHand Speed, the strength of your muscle contraction controls the
degree of force used to grip the object. This control makes it easier to handle small or fragile objects.
Auto-Grasp SUVA-Sensor Technology (Fig. 1)
If an object begins to slip out of your prosthetic hand, the SensorHand Speed automatically increases the
gripping force until the object is held securely.
To function in this way, sensors integrated in the thumb (See arrow in Fig. 1) and finger area transmit signals
which are evaluated by special electronics. The electronics then tell the motor the required gripping force.
You can override the Auto-Grasp feature at any time by making a brief opening signal.
With the SensorHand Speed, you don't need to constantly control your grip: you can pay attention to other
things instead. Suddenly everyday situations – which might require concentration when using other prosthetic
systems – are easier to tackle.
• Plastic grocery bags, for example, will no longer tend to slip out of your hand.
• Tying your shoelaces becomes easier, too.
• Delicate drinkware no longer slips when you pour liquids into them.
• Etc.
A brief opening signal will immediately stop the SensorHand Speed's Auto-Grasp response at any time.
Also, the maximum value of the automatic gripping force is limited, and the Auto-Grasp feature is available
only for the control modes 1 to 4.
For grasping flexible foam materials or tools, control mode 6 offers you the possibility to manually deactivate
the SUVA-Sensor.
