definitively, take it to a local recycling
plant for a disposal which is not harmful
to the environment.

3 Applications

The Powered Mixers PMX-842USB and PMX-
1282USB are a combination of a mixer and a
stereo power amplifier with an output power of
2 × 250 W
or 2 × 400 W
RMS
RMS
ers). The units are designed as tabletop units
and especially suited for musicians and stage
applications. The model PMX-842USB has six
input channels (4 × mono, 2 × stereo) and the
model PMX-1282USB has ten input channels
(8 × mono, 2 × stereo) to which (phantom-pow-
ered) microphones and audio sources with line
output level may be connected.
The input channels can be added to a main
stereo sum (MAIN MIX L/R), a second stereo
sum (ALT 3 – 4) and two Aux send ways. They
are equipped with various adjusting facilities,
e. g.
– gain controls in the mono channels, selector
switches to match the line level in the stereo
channels
– insert jacks in the mono channels to insert
units for sound processing
– low cut filters in the mono channels, 3-way
equalizers in all input channels
– one control each for the Aux send way 1 (for
each channel separately switchable post/pre-
fader) and the Aux send way 2 (post-fader)
– PFL / SOLO function with indicating LED for
monitoring the channel signal
An integrated multi-effect processor offers the
facility to select 100 different effects. The effect
signal can be added to the sum MAIN MIX or
ALT 3 – 4.
In addition to connections for an analog recorder
the powered mixer is provided with a USB audio
interface for connection to a computer. The USB
interface can be used both as an output for digi-
tal recording of the MAIN MIX sum and as an
input for feeding audio data to the powered
mixer. For operation of the powered mixer with
the computer, the audio software supplied with
the operating system can be used or an audio
software additionally installed. Various audio
reproducing and recording programmes are
available on the Internet free of charge.

4 Connection

Prior to connecting units or changing existing
connections switch off the powered mixer or set
all output controls to minimum.

4.1 Audio sources

As it is not possible to switch between the inputs
in the mono channels, either connect the micro-
phone input (1) or the line input (2), not both
inputs at the same time.

4.1.1 Microphones

Connect microphones via XLR plugs to the bal-
anced jacks MIC (1) of the mono channels.
If required, use the switch PHANTOM POWER
(47) for condenser microphones to centrally
switch on a 48 V phantom power for all XLR
jacks. If it is switched on, the red LED +48V (42)
lights up during operation.
CAUTION
G
With the phantom power switched on, no
microphones with unbalanced output must
be connected. These microphones can be
damaged.
G
To prevent switching noise, only actuate the
switch PHANTOM POWER when the unit is
switched off or the output controls are set to
minimum.

4.1.2 Line audio sources

Connect units with line output level (e. g. musical
(at 4 Ω speak-
instruments) via 6.3 mm plugs to the line inputs
LINE IN (2) of the input channels:
– Connect mono units to the line inputs of the
mono channels.
For connecting a mono unit to a stereo chan-
nel, only use jack L. The mono signal is then
internally switched to the right and left chan-
nels.
– Connect stereo units to the line inputs of the
stereo channels: jack L = left channel, jack R
= right channel.
If the number of input channels is not sufficient,
the following stereo inputs can also be used for
connection of additional line sources :
– the inputs STEREO AUX RETURN 1 (16) and
STEREO AUX RETURN 2 (20): jack LEFT =
left channel, jack RIGHT = right channel.
When connecting a mono unit to the input
STEREO AUX RETURN 1, only use the jack
LEFT, the mono signal is then internally dis-
tributed to the left and right channels.
Note: By connection of a unit to the left and right
jacks STEREO AUX RETURN 2 the left output and
right output respectively of the internal effect proces-
sor are muted.
– the input CD / TAPE INPUT (18) with phono
jacks, e. g. for connection of a CD player for
background music in music breaks.
All 6.3 m jacks of the inputs are balanced. How-
ever, it is also possible to connect units with
unbalanced output via 2-pole 6.3 mm plugs.

4.2 Effect units

4.2.1 Inserting effect units

Effect units (e. g. units for sound processing like
compressors, equalizers, noise gates) can
directly be inserted into the mono channels: The
channel signal is decoupled after the control
TRIM (4), is routed completely via the effect unit
and is returned to the channel at the same place
of the signal way.
Connect the effect unit to the 6.3 mm jack
CHANNEL INSERT (56) of the respective chan-
nel. The plugs must be connected as follows:
tip
= Send (output)
ring
= Return (input)
sleeve = ground
For connection of effect units with separate input
jacks and output jacks, Y cables are necessary,
e. g. MCA-202 from MONACOR:
Connection of the Y cable MCA-202
Model PMX-1282USB only:
Via the jacks MAIN INSERTS (55) it is also pos-
sible to insert an effect unit (e. g. graphic equal-
izer) into the left channel and the right channel of
the MAIN MIX sum, still ahead of the level control
via the master faders (45). The jacks are con-
nected like the Insert jacks in the input channels:
Connect the right input / output of the unit to the
jack "R" and the left input / output to the jack "L".

4.2.2 Using Aux send ways

Via the Aux send ways 1 and 2, signal parts can
be decoupled from the input channels, pro -
cessed via an effect unit (e. g. reverb unit) and
returned to the powered mixer via the Return
inputs. The signal pick-up for an Aux send way
used as an effect way is usually post-fader, i. e.
the channel signal is added to the Aux send way
after the fader (15). This way the effect part of a
channel is always in proportion to the channel
level adjusted. The Aux send way 1 can be
adjusted separately for each channel to post-
fader or pre-fader. The Aux send way 2 is always
adjusted to post-fader. It serves at the same time
as the effect way for the internal effect processor.
1) Depending on the Aux send way used, con-
nect the input of the effect unit via a 6.3 mm
plug to the mono output
AUX SEND 1 (17) of the Aux send way 1 or
AUX SEND 2 (21) of the Aux send way 2.
2) To return the signal coming from the effect
unit, the inputs STEREO AUX RETURN 1
(16) and STEREO AUX RETURN 2 (20) are
available:
→ When using the input STEREO AUX
RETURN 1, the effect signal can be
added to the MAIN MIX sum and the Aux
send way 1 with the two Aux Return con-
trols 1 (35, 36).
Example of application: If a monitor system is
connected to the output AUX SEND 1 and the
effect unit is connected to the output AUX
SEND 2 and the input STEREO AUX RETURN 1,
the effect signal can be added separately to the
MAIN MIX sum and the monitor signal.
→ When using the input STEREO AUX
RETURN 2, the effect signal can be
added to the master channels MAIN MIX
or ALT 3 – 4 with the Aux Return control 2
(37), depending on the routing button
(38). By connection of the left jack and the
right jack of this input, the left output and
the right output respectively of the internal
effect processor are muted.
Connect the output of the effect unit via
6.3 mm plugs to the desired Return input:
LEFT = left channel, RIGHT = right channel.
The jacks of the Return inputs are balanced.
When connecting an effect unit with mono
output to the input STEREO AUX RETURN 1,
only use the jack LEFT, then the mono signal
is internally split to the left channel and the
right channel.
Alternatively to a Return input, the effect
unit can also be connected via the line input
of a free input channel.
Please also pay attention to the notes about the
button MUTE ALT 3 – 4 (11) in chapter 5.5.

4.3 Recorder

A stereo recorder, e. g. tape recorder, may be
connected via phono plugs to the CD / TAPE
jacks (L = left channel, R = right channel):
1) For reproduction, connect the output of the
recorder to the input CD / TAPE INPUT (18)
2) For recording, connect the input of the re -
corder to the output CD / TAPE OUTPUT (19).
The output receives the MAIN MIX sum sig-
nal adjusted with the faders MAIN MIX (45).
