10. Establish the patency of the patient's upper airway tract. The patient's airway
should be cleared by coughing and/or suctioning before plugging the tracheostomy
tube with the decannulation plug.
11. Completely deflate the tracheostomy tube cuff (DFEN only).
12. Remove the Disposable Inner Cannula (DIC) with 15mm snap-lock connector.
13. To insert the DDCP, grasp the plug by the pinch clamps of the snap-lock connector
and pinch several times to loosen.
14. Holding the pinch clamps, secure one side of the DDCP to the proximal end of the
outer cannula.
CAUTION:
To avoid applying pressure against the patient, the neck plate may be stabilized
with your free hand during the locking procedure. Do not attempt to secure
both clamps simultaneously.
15. Holding the first side securely, roll the decannulation plug across the connector
until the other clamp is in position.
16. Gently but firmly, press the second clamp and let it snap-lock into place. Check for
a secure connection.
17. If the patient needs to be mechanically ventilated while the decanulation plug
is in use, remove the decannulation plug, insert the Disposable Inner Cannula with
15mm snap-lock connector and then connect it to the ventilator.
WARNING:
IF THE PATIENT HAS DIFFICULTY BREATHING, IMMEDIATELY REMOVE THE
DISPOSABLE DECANNULATION PLUG, INSERT THE DISPOSABLE INNER
CANNULA AND VERIFY AIRWAY PATENCY.
Removing Tube
18. The disposable inner cannula can be replaced to maintain a patent airway without
requiring the entire tube to be changed.
19. Before removing the tracheostomy tube, the cuff (if present) should be completely
deflated with a syringe. This will ensure that the cuff passes through the stoma with
minimum resistance.
