OVERLOADING / ROPE LIFESPAN / INSPECTION
When a static load has been used to select a rope,
the load must be handled slowly and smoothly to
minimize dynamic effects and to avoid exceeding the
provision for them. If a rope has been shock loaded
or has experienced excessive dynamic loading, it
should be retired.
Excessive dynamic loading of a high elongation rope
is dangerous because of stored energy which, upon
rope failure, will demonstrate sudden elastic release
(recoil) leading to possible injury.

ROPE LIFESPAN

The operational lifetime of a rope (Lifespan) de-
pends on many factors, including manner, dura-
tion, and intensity of use, and use environment. A
precise lifespan cannot be estimated due to the
wide variations in the afore-mentioned factors.
Wear or damage could occur on the first use thus
limiting a rope's lifetime to one single use. For
the safety of the user and this equipment it is es-
sential that this rope be removed from service if
there is any doubt of its condition for safe use or
if the rope has previosly arrested a fall.

INSPECTION

All ropes should be inspected before and after each
use. A schedule of periodic inspections by a qualified
individual should be setup, maintained, and con-

ducted in strict accordance with the manufacturer's
recommendations.
The minimum acceptable frequency of inspec-
tion is every 12 months. More frequent inspec-
tions should occur based on equipment type,
frequency of use, environmental conditions, and
applicable law.
No type of visual inspection can be guaranteed to
determine accurately and precisely actual residual
strength. When the fibers show wear in any given
area, the rope should be downgraded or replaced.
Inspections should include visual detection for
pulled and frayed strands and broken yarns. A pulled
strand can snag on foreign objects during a rope
operation. Inspect after each use for the existence
of cuts, chaffing, hard spots, or any signs of fiber
deterioration.
Both outer and inner rope fibers contribute to the
strength of the rope. When either is worn, the rope
is weakened. A heavily-used rope will often become
compacted or hard which indicates reduced strength.
The rope should be discarded if this condition exists.
The safety of the user depends on the quality of
performance and durability of the rope and the
equipment (rope system) with which it is used. All
system components can be subject to reduction in
performance with use. Avoid using a rope that shows
signs of aging and wear. If in doubt, destroy the used
rope and any system component showing an indica-
tion of wear which may affect user safety.
