Learning unit 3
Level 3: Animal products –
Material: Level 3 of the food pyramid
dairy products: dairy products: milk carton, yogurt, slice of cheese, hard cheese
(yellow), Camembert cheese (white);
fish and meat: Sausage, steak, sardine, egg
Things to know about animal products!
∙ Dairy products are healthy, for they supply protein and calcium. This is important
for the bones and teeth. You should have 3 servings of dairy products a
day – preferably natural without additional sugar!
∙ Meat, fish, sausage, and eggs supply iron, B vitamins, and protein – but also
fat. 2 or 3 eggs and 4 to 5 servings of meat or sausage per week are okay. Lean
ham and poultry sausage contain less fat that salami or meat sausage.
∙ Fish supplies in addition valuable minerals. You should eat fish once a week!
∙ You should eat more dairy products than meat, fish, and eggs. That's why the
dairy product field is larger on this level than the meat/fish/egg field.
Be careful! Food from this group should be consumed in moderation!
Background information: The products from this group contain animal
protein – a valuable supplier of energy for growth and muscle development.
It is generally recommended to rely on unsweetened dairy products and lean
varieties of meat and sausage, e.g., boiled ham. There is often a lot of fat and salt
contained in sausage especially! The meat should be prepared in a way that is low
in fat. Fish contains iodine, and fish rich in fat contains valuable Omega-3 fatty
acids. Fish covered all over with bread crumbs often tastes better to children;
however a low-fat preparation should be considered. Cheese also supplies protein
and calcium. But be careful! Many kinds of cheese also have all sorts of fat in them.
That's why cheese of more than 40% in the dry matter should only be eaten in
smaller quantities. Anyone who would like to eat more cheese should naturally
resort to low-fat varieties,e.g., hard cheese or cottage cheese.
I already know that!
A getting to know and sorting game
Lay the disk for level 3 in the middle of the table and place all of the wooden
pieces of this food group around it. Taking turns, each child may now select a
wooden piece, take it into their hands and show it to the other children. The child
then says the name of the food and whether it has to be designated as a dairy
product or meat/fish/egg and puts it down on the appropriate side of the disk.
Also play together the variation with the cloth pouch (as in "fruit and vegetables").
If the group is larger than the number of pieces, after guessing, the piece can be
put back again into the pouch before it is passed on.
