High frequency surgical device
To prevent burns caused by the neutral electrode, always ensure the
following:
Select areas of application for neutral electrodes that result in the
shortest possible electrical pathways between active and neutral
electrodes; and that are longitudinal or diagonal to the body (since
muscles with the same orientation as the fibrilla are more conduc-
tive).
In operations in the thorax area, make certain the path of the cur-
rent does not run across the chest and does not run through the
heart.
Depending on the operation field, apply the neutral electrode at the
nearest upper arm or thigh, if possible.
When applying disposable self-adhesive electrodes, follow the in-
structions of the supplier with regard to the area of application.
Ensure that the application area is free of both scar tissue and bony
outgrowth.
Make sure that the current pathway does not intersect any im-
plants (e.g., bone nails, bone plates, endoprostheses).
Prior to applying the neutral electrode:
– Remove bushy hair growth.
– Clean the area to be operated on (do not use alcohol, as it dries
out the skin and increases contact resistance).
– In patients with poor circulation, massage or brush the applica-
tion area.
Apply neutral electrodes systematically over the entire surface. Se-
cure reusable neutral electrodes with rubber bands or elastic ban-
dage, thereby ensuring that they do not come loose when the
patient moves. At the same time, ensure that such measures do not
constrict blood flow (risk of necroses).
Apply neutral electrode type 3 in such a way that the black, con-
ductive surfaces are in contact with the patient and the blue sur-
face faces away from the body.
To forestall raised contact resistance caused by epidermal dehydra-
tion arising from the use of damp cloths or electrode paste: do not
under any circumstances use damp cloths or electrode paste.
To prevent burns arising from short bursts of high electric current:
Ensure that no fluids (e.g. irrigation fluids, disinfectants, blood,
urine) get between the patient and the neutral electrode.
To prevent fluid buildup, reduced blood flow or perfusion, pressure
necroses, displacement of the neutral electrodes and contact resis-
tance: do not lay neutral electrodes under patient's buttocks or
back.
Check to make sure that the electrical pathway of the HF device
does not intersect any EEG electrodes.

2. Product description

2.1 Components required to operate the device

The following components are required to operate the high-frequency
surgical device
deluxe (GN 640):
• Power cord
• Foot pedal
• Neutral electrode
• Electrode handle with "fingertip" buttons.
• Operating electrode
• Connecting cable
• Bipolar equipment

2.2 Intended use

The
(GN 640) is intended for use in surgery, for generating
the HF power for monopolar and bipolar incisions and coagulating in
micro- and macro-surgery.
Use of the monopolar and bipolar modes of operation
All operational modes are illustrated by two different pictograms, one
of which is a simplified pictogram, which is always visible, and the
other a detailed pictogram, which is displayed when the operational
mode is selected.
Each of these pictograms displays a typical application and its effects.
