Vehicle-Mounted Electric
Winch Safety
WARNING: Never use the winch to pull fixed or obstructed loads.
a) This tool is to be used by trained personnel only. Do not operate this tool without proper
understanding of its use and features. Read the entire instruction manual before use.
b) Always use the instruction manual for reference. Do not try to implement procedures not
described in the manufacturer's instruction manual.
c) Ensure proper cable management at all times. Always confirm the cable is wound in a
uniform fashion when extracting/withdrawing. If the cable is wound incorrectly, stop and rewind
the cable.
d) Always maintain cable tension before load movement. Do not allow the load to move before
the cable is properly tensioned. Load movement with a slack cable will place the winch under
unnecessary strain, putting the operator or nearby bystanders in danger.
e) DO NOT attempt to move loads above the rated load capacity. Refer to the manufacturer's
specification or instruction manual for specific information on the tool's load capacity.
f) DO NOT perform excessive 'inching' with the winch. Inching is the operation in which the
winch is operated in short bursts in quick succession. Inching can rapidly overload the motor
causing failure that can lead to operator or bystander injury.
g) Never use the winch as a hoist, or to tow another vehicle. Prolonged load will cause damage
to the internal components.
h) Never use the winch to transport/tow people or animals. This winch is not designed for
carrying, towing or recovering people and animals; attaching people or animals to the winch can
cause severe harm and injury.
i) Never lift objects vertically. This winch was designed for horizontal load movements only.
j) Do not modify or attach unapproved accessories to the winch. Attempting to alter the winch
by fitting unapproved modifications is dangerous and will cause the winch to operate outside its
design specification.
k) Always perform proper maintenance and check for damage before every use. Due to the
high stresses inflicted on this tool, it is imperative to regularly maintain and check for component
damage before every use.
l) Do not apply load to the cable when fully extended. Always maintain at least 4 turns of the
cable reel on the winch drum.
m) Never try to cross or stand between the winch and the load whilst operating the winch.
Keep yourself and bystanders away from the path of the cable during operation.
n) Always secure the load after operation. The winch does not feature a locking mechanism
and is not designed to be under strain for extended periods of time. Secure the load after the
winching operation has been performed.
o) If loading a boat onto a trailer without a keel or hull rollers, ensure the trailer is
submerged in the water whilst the boat is being winched. Do not attempt to drag the boat
onto the trailer.
p) Always secure the winching vehicle using wheel chocks or similar. Do not rely on the
vehicle's parking brake to secure the vehicle in position.
q) Maintain lubrication of moving components. Clean and lubricate the winch assembly
frequently; components such as the cable, hook, bearings and gearbox should remain lubricated
at all times.
r) Leaving the winch permanently connected to the vehicle's power supply may drain the
battery. Without a built-in switchbox the winch will persist to draw current from the vehicle's
battery. To prevent consistently draining the battery, install a relay or disconnect the winch from
the power supply when not in use and leave ample time for the battery to recharge.
s) Do not push sideways against cable under tension; the cable might break under this load
and recoil back, striking the person pushing against it or a bystander.
t) If cable begins to get entangled, stop winch immediately and release the cable
using switch.
u) Do not submerge winch in water. If winch gets submerged accidentally, it needs to be
immediately disassembled, cleaned, dried and re-lubricated by a qualified technician to prevent
permanent damage from corrosion.
v) Only winch with the winching vehicle's transmission in neutral. Winching with a vehicle's
transmission in gear or park may damage the transmission. A vehicle's transmission is not
designed to handle that type of load.
Note: If you wish to have the winch turn on and off with the vehicle's ignition, use a fused relay
circuit so that a low-current circuit can turn on and off a high-current connection that is directly
connected to the battery.
