3 Operating Principle
UV-3100 equipment is composed of five parts:
•
An halogen lamp and a deuterium lamp as light sources.
•
A monochromator to select the wavelength and to eliminate the unwanted second
order radiations.
•
A compartment to accommodate the sample cuvettes.
•
A photodetector to receive light transmittance and to convert it to electrical sign.
•
A display where absorbance, tramittance and concentration values are shown.
The halogen lamp light (or the deuterium one if we work in a wavelength lower than
340 nm) is focused on the monochromator entrance where a collimated mirror points
the light beam towards the diffraction grating.
The diffraction grating diffuses the light beam to produce a spectrum. A part of it
focuses in the monochromator output slot by means of another collimated mirror.
The wavelength light beam selected passes through a filter which helps eliminating
unwanted second order radiations from the diffraction grating.
This light beam goes through the sample, and then the photodetector produces an
electrical sign used to make the transmittance or absorbance calculations, shown in
the digital display.
