LIFESPAN, OBSOLESCENCE AND COMPONENT INSPECTION
Climbing Lines
Climbing lines in Hitch Climber Systems are delivered in a
number of lengths, each has a [slaice]
end and a stopper knot at least 500 mm from the other
end. The stopper knot must always be present to ensure
that the adjuster (friction hitch) does not run off the end of
the rope.
Check that the stopper knot is present and located at least
500 mm from the running end of the rope. Follow the se-
quence right to ensure that the stopper knot is correctly
tied, dressed and set:
Tachyon™: Tachyon™ is a kernmantle construction, more
specifically a three layer rope i.e. a filler core of parallel
strands is covered by an inner braid, which in turn has a
braided cover. Inner and outer layers share the load. Ta-
chyon has a braided cover with 24 strands of Polyester.
Braided Safety Blue™: Braided Safety Blue™ is also a
kernmantle construction rope, more specifically, a two la-
yer rope with a braided cover over a bundle of parallel core
filler strands. Both layers carry the load. The outer braid
carries more load than the inner strands. Braided Safety
Blue™ has a braided cover with 16 strands of Polyester.
For both ropes, heat, abrasion and other physical damage is most likely to be highlighted in the
cover. Impact damage (e.g. from tree sections) may also be indicated by variations in core di-
mensions. Rope strength is reduced by fibre and physical damage. Carry out visual and tactile
inspections regularly. Move (or remove) the friction hitch, rope protectors and constriction bands
to allow complete inspection. Check for cut, fluffy and heat damaged fibres. Check that the rope
characteristics are normal and uniform for its entire length. Identify the location of any changes in
diameter or stiffness and carry out a more detailed inspection at these points. Refer to a Compe-
tent Person when appropriate.
If doubt exists about the performance of the rope (e.g. localised stiffness), follow the care in-
structions included in the product specific Instructions for use and thoroughly inspect the rope
