Always make sure that your tail lights and reflectors are clean. A mild soapy solution can be used
for cleaning, but no harsh cleaners, alcohol, petroleum ether or solvents. It is best to just wipe your
trailer down with a damp cloth.
Complete cleaning should be carried out regularly, in particular after driving on roads which have
been gritted with road salt. Road salt reacts very aggressively on the surfaces and can corrode the
layer of corrosion inhibitor.
The trailer is basically protected from rust by a powder coating. However, there is a risk of corrosion
in particular on cut edges and drilled holes. These areas and surfaces, which have been damaged by
stone chippings, for example, must be sealed urgently with protective zinc paint, for instance.
8.2 | Weathering
Discolourations as a result of weathering and dust and dirt are unavoidable and do not represent a
fault.
8.3 | Lubricating the coupling
The moving parts of the coupling are first cleaned and/or degreased and then a multi-purpose
grease is reapplied.
8.4 | Checking the screw connections
Screw connections can come loose as a result of vibrations. Therefore, they have to be checked
regularly to determine whether they are firmly fastened, and re-tightened as necessary.
8.5 | Checking/changing tyres
The wheels also have to be checked for wear. The minimum profile depth in Germany is 1.6 mm (in
other countries different regulations may apply). Even if the profile is still deep enough, the tyres have
to be checked regularly as under certain circumstances they age more quickly as a result of direct
sunlight and other effects of weathering. Tyres should generally never be older than 6 years old. This
is one of the compulsory requirement for a 100 km/h approval. The age of the tyres can be read from
what is referred to as the DOT number (Department Of Transportation).
The combination "1619" means that the tyres were produced in week 16 of the year 2019. According
to the tyre manufacturer, the air pressure is 1.6 bar. If the trailer stands on the tyres for a longer
period, the air pressure can be increased a little in order to prevent flats spots.
If a tyre has to be changed, you must only use tyre size 16.5x6.5-8 73M. After the tyre change, tighten
the wheel bolts in a diagonal sequence. The tightening torque of the wheel bolts is 90 Nm. After
100 km check that the wheel bolts are firmly in place with a torque wrench.
8.6 | Inspecting the lighting system
The entire lighting system consists of LED lights. In certain circumstances this can lead to problems
on older towing vehicles if the electrical system of the towing vehicle recognises the low power of
the LEDs as the failure of a conventional light bulb, triggering an error message as a result. This will
then have to be remedied using resistors.
Despite the durability of LEDs, a light may still fail.
