4 – auxiliary emission check, 5 – engine idling, 6 – vehicle computer outputs, 79 – transmission. The next two
digits identify the specifi c type of fault. Refer to the vehicle service manual for a list of error codes or contact
the vehicle manufacturer for assistance.
The OBD2 system checks some of the parameters continuously from the moment the engine is started until it
is switched off . Such parameters will have the "Ready" or "Complete" status. Some parameters, however, can
only be monitored under certain operating conditions of the vehicle, and if these conditions are not met, the
parameter check status will show "Not Ready" or "Not Complete". Please refer to the vehicle service manual
or contact the vehicle manufacturer for assistance regarding the conditions for checking these parameters.
Before you start work, you must fi nd the Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC) socket in your vehicle, which is
located in diff erent places depending on the vehicle. Refer to the vehicle service manual or contact the vehicle
manufacturer for assistance regarding the DLC socket location.
OBD2 terminology
PCM – Powertrain Control Module – indicates a computer which controls the engine and the drive.
MIL – Malfunction Indicator Light – indicates a light on the vehicle's dashboard which notifi es a fault.
DTC – Diagnostic Trouble Code – an alphanumeric code which indicates the location of the fault.
FFD – Freeze Frame Data – if an exhaust emission error is registered, the OBD2 system will not only return
the DTC, but will also record current operating parameters which can help identify the fault.
PID – Parameter ID – the operating parameter identifi er.
VI – Vehicle Information – the information on the vehicle stored in the computer system memory.
TESTER OPERATION
Indicator lights:
green – confi rms correct engine operation
yellow – indicates possible engine problem, some tests cannot be performed, pending DTC
red – indicates engine problem, MIL may be on.
Buttons:
back button – allows you to return to the previous menu
arrow keys – allow you to navigate through the menu
confi rm button – allows you to select the currently highlighted menu item.
Connecting the tester to the vehicle computer
Ensure the vehicle's ignition is off , connect the tester to the DLC and switch on the ignition or start the engine
depending on the vehicle.
Wait until the start screen appears. This can take up to several seconds. During this time do not disconnect the
tester from the DLC and do not press any buttons.
The start-up screen contains the "Scan" and "Setup" items. Selecting with the arrows and then selecting with
the approval button: the "Scan" item will start the OBD2 diagnostics; the "Setup" item allows access to the
tester settings.
Tester settings
Language – allows the language of operation of the tester to be selected – the factory setting is English.
Unit of measure – allows the selection of units of measure between metric and imperial. Metric units are set
by default.
Contrast – allows the contrast of the display to be selected. the default setting is 25%.
