Implant procedure: connecting the lead to two extensions

Following intraoperative test stimulation, use this procedure to connect the
surgical lead to two Medtronic in-line 1x8 extensions. Extensions are required
for shorter lead lengths (ie, 30 cm) to reach the neurostimulator implant site, and
the connector boots are used as the anchor points to secure the lead. Extensions
are optional for longer leads (ie, 65 cm). Prior to connecting the extensions to a
65 cm lead, tunnel the 65 cm lead bodies (refer to "Tunneling the lead" within
"Tunneling the lead for direct connection to a neurostimulator" on page 15 for
instructions).
If connecting the surgical lead directly to a Medtronic neurostimulator, refer to
"Implant procedure: connecting the lead directly to a neurostimulator" on
page 14.
This procedure includes the following sections:

Tunneling the extensions

Creating a pocket for the lead-extension connections

Connecting the extensions

Creating strain-relief loops and suturing the connector boots
Tunneling the extensions
For instructions on tunneling the extensions, refer to the appropriate extension
manual.
Note: This procedure requires two Medtronic in-line 1x8 extensions, which are
available in a separate kit.
Creating a pocket for the lead-extension connections
For instructions on creating a pocket for the lead-extension connections, refer
to the appropriate extension manual.

Cautions:
Do not use saline or other ionic fluids at connections, which could result
in a short circuit.
Before connecting components, wipe off any body fluids and dry all
connections. Fluids in the connection may result in stimulation at the
connection site, intermittent stimulation, or loss of stimulation.
1. Slip a connector boot onto each lead body with the open end of the
connector boots facing out, exposing the lead contacts.
Notes:
Irrigate the connector boots with a nonionic antibiotic solution. Dry the
interior of the connector boots.
A clear and a white radiopaque boot are provided to distinguish
between the lead bodies.
2. Wipe the lead bodies and the extension setscrew connector junctions with
sterile gauze. If necessary, use sterile (United States Pharmacopeia
[USP]) water or a nonionic antibiotic solution. Dry all connections.
3. Insert each lead connector fully into an extension setscrew connector
junction.
Notes:
Each lead contact must be aligned under each extension connector
contact.
During insertion, some resistance is typical.
4. Use the torque wrench to tighten the setscrews to complete the electrical
circuit.
#
Cautions:
To avoid overtightening, do not use a hex wrench to tighten an
extension setscrew. Overtightening an extension setscrew may
damage the lead contacts and cause an open or short circuit,
resulting in intermittent or loss of stimulation.
