This kit contains:
Designation
Fuel filter*
Installation instructions
* The nipples, fuel pipe, fuel hose, fuel tap etc. are not in-
cluded and must be ordered separately.
NOTE! Single filters are supplied with plugs. Remove the
plugs before you start the installation.
NOTE! The filters are intended for use as primary filters in
combination with the ordinary fuel filter.
The filter should be connected to the suction side of the
feed pump (between the feed pump and the fuel tank).
To reduce the resistance in the fuel suction pipe, the filter
should be installed at a height between the base of the
tank and the feed pump.
The filters are water traps, i.e. water which is always
found in fuel tanks, is separated from the fuel and is col-
lected in the filter bowl. The bowl is provided with a drain
plug / tap to empty water out of the filter. Some filters are
transparent and have an aluminium bowl to protect the
filter from damage.
NOTE! The filters have a separate input in the filter bowl
for connecting the Volvo Penta electronic water alarm to
alert the boat owner.
The filter inlet is marked "IN" and the outlet is marked
"OUT".
Installation
1. Install the filter vertically on a bulkhead or stand, where
it is less affected by engine vibration. Inspection and insert
changes should be easy to do.
NOTE! The necessary free space above the filter cover
for insert changes is marked on the dimension sketches,
Fig 1-4.
NOTE! A shut-off tap must be installed in the suction pipe
between the tank and the filter. On double filters, a shut-
off tap is also installed on the filter itself.
Fuel pipe
WARNING! It is very important to obey the fuel safety
precautions during the installation. Do not smoke and do
not permit open flames near to the fuel system.
Use Loctite
574 on tapered nipples.

Servicing
Filter insert
A blocked fuel filter can cause engine malfunction. Make
sure you always have a Volvo Penta original spare filter
insert aboard.
NOTE! The twin filter is equipped with a filter change
pressure gauge. Read the indications on the gauge and
change the filter insert when the gauge shows:

Changing the filter insert
- Remove the T-handle and filter cover
- Remove the used filter insert with a twisting movement
- Install the new insert and press it down until it bottoms
- Fill all the way up with clean diesel fuel
- Change the seal on the lid
- Change the O-ring on the T-handle as necessary
- Lubricate with clean diesel fuel
- Install the lid and tighten the T-handle by hand.
Before the first start
Remove the cover and fill the filter with clean diesel fuel.
Install the lid and tighten it by hand. Wipe away any die-
sel fuel which might have leaked out. Open the fuel tap.
NOTE! If a double filter is used, make sure that the valve
knob is in the open position (all on). Start the engine and
check the system.
Cleaning the fuel bowl
Clean the filter fuel bowl as necessary. Use a clean, soft
rag or a brush and soapy water. Do not use solvents
(apart from diesel fuel) or abrasive cleaning agents. Wipe
and dry the bowl carefully before the filter is used again.
Refer to the illustration below.
IMPORTANT! If a primary fuel filter is used in combina-
tion with an electric fuel shut-off valve (1), the non-return
valve in the primary fuel filter (2) must be removed, if
installed. If this is not done, the stop function will fail be-
cause of insufficient partial vacuum in the injection pump.
6-10 inches of mercury ("Hg") at idle or
16-20 inches of mercury ("Hg") at full engine speed.
