HPLC columns have a finite lifetime.
Most common cause of column failure is due to high pressure,
typically caused by particulates.
Sources of particulate contamination
— Debris from instrument seals
— Particles in the sample
— Particles in the mobile phase
Chemical Degradation
— Contamination from adsorbed materials
Strongly retained/irreversible bound

— Microbial growth
— Hydrolysis (cleavage) of bonded ligand (ODS,etc.)
— Dissolution of stationary support (silica, etc.)
