OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
DONNING – Standard Suspension
1. Adjust head cradle size as needed to fit comfortably on head.
2. Place the respirator over the mouth and nose, then pull the head harness over the
crown of the head.
3. Take the bottom straps in both hands, place them at the back of the neck and hook
them together.
4. Tighten the top straps first by pulling on ends to achieve a comfortable and secure fit
(see fig 1).
5. Tighten bottom straps using the rear adjustments (strap tension may be decreased by
pushing out on back side of buckles).
6. Perform a positive and/or negative pressure face fit check. The negative pressure fit
check is recommended when using the 2000/6035 filters, the positive pressure fit
check is recommended when using other filters.
DONNING – Drop Down Suspension
1. Adjust head harness on facepiece as shown (from fig 2 to 3).
2. Adjust head cradle size as needed to fit comfortably on head.
3. While holding head harness strap ends with one hand, slide the facepiece up onto
your face (see fig 4).
4. Take the bottom straps in both hands, place them at the back of the neck and hook
them together.
5. Tighten the top straps first by pulling on ends to achieve a comfortable and secure fit
(see fig 1).
6. Tighten bottom straps using the rear adjustments (strap tension may be decreased by
pushing out on back side of buckles).
7. Perform a positive and/or negative pressure face fit check. The negative pressure fit
check is recommended when using the 2000/6035 filters, the positive pressure fit
check is recommended when using other filters.
FACE FIT CHECKS
Positive Pressure Facefit Check (all filters except 2000/6035) (see fig 5):
Place the palm of the hand over the exhalation valve cover and exhale gently.
If the facepiece bulges slightly and no air leaks between the face and the facepiece are
detected, a proper fit has been achieved.
If air leakage is detected, reposition the respirator on the face and/or readjust the elastic
strap to eliminate the leakage. Repeat the above face fit check.
Negative Pressure Facefit Check (2000/6035) (see fig 6):
Press your thumbs into the central indentation of the filters, inhale gently and hold your
breath for five or ten seconds.
If the facepiece collapses slightly a proper fit has been achieved.
If air leakage is detected, reposition the respirator on the face and/or readjust the tension
of the elastic strap to eliminate the leakage. Repeat the above face fit check.

Face Fit Testing
For information regarding Face Fit testing procedures, contact 3M TechAssist on 1800
024 464 (AUS), 0800 364 357 (NZ) or refer to AS/NZS 1715.
If you cannot achieve a proper fit, do not enter the contaminated area.
See your supervisor.
IN USE
Do not remove the facepiece, filters or turn off the air supply until you have vacated the
contaminated area.
If using with a 3M air supply unit (see Reference Leaflet):
• Take care to prevent the breathing tube from becoming looped around protruding
objects.
• If during use the air supply stops or is reduced, vacate the contaminated area
immediately and investigate the cause.
The respirator should be discarded and replaced at least every 3 years after
commencement of use or 5 years after manufacture whichever is earlier.
DOFFING
Do not remove the facepiece, filters or turn off the air supply until you have vacated
the contaminated area.
1. Release the tension on the head straps by pushing on the back side of the buckles.
2. Unhook the bottom straps.
3. Carefully lift facepiece off the face and remove the respirator by lifting up and away
from the head.
4. If appropriate, switch off the air filter unit or disconnect the compressed air supply
tube from the regulator.
5. Unbuckle the waist belt.
NOTE
If the respirator has been used in an area that has caused it to become
contaminated with a substance requiring special decontamination procedures it
should be placed in a suitable container and sealed until it can be
decontaminated.
CLEANING INSTRUCTION
Cleaning is recommended after each use. Disassemble by removing the filters, head
straps and other parts (see figs 7, 8 and 9).
Clean the facepiece (excluding filters) with 3M 504 Respirator Cleaning Wipes or by
immersing in warm cleaning solution, water temperature not to exceed 50°C, scrub with
soft brush until clean. Add neutral detergent if necessary.
Do not use cleaners containing lanolin or other oils.
Disinfect respirator by soaking in a solution of quaternary ammonia disinfectant, sodium
hypochlorite or other disinfectant.
Rinse in clean, warm water and air dry in a non-contaminated atmosphere.
Facepiece components, especially the exhalation valve and seat, should be inspected
prior to each use.
