X. Drum Brake
3. Axle Sleeve Position Adjustment
a. Remove both wheels. Using a 24mm wrench, loosen jam nut (Fig. 55:A) and unthread all the
way onto unthreaded portion of strut adapter (Fig. 55:B). Repeat for opposite side of chair.
b. Using a 24mm wrench, loosen strut adapter and thread all the way into strut (Fig. 55:C),
which will also unthread it from the axle sleeve of the brake assembly. Repeat for opposite
side of chair.
c. Remove washers, move brake assemblies to new position and replace washers.
d. With brake assemblies seated against the outside of the axle plates, rethread strut adapters
onto axle sleeves on each side of the chair. Do not force axle plates outward or inward to
begin threads. If there is a gap between the end of the strut adapter and the axle sleeve,
thread the adapter outward to meet the sleeve (again, make sure that the brake assembly is
seated against the axle plate) - do not force the axle plate inward to start the threads. If
there is interference between the adapter and the axle sleeve, thread the adapter into the
strut tube further until threads can be started without flexing axle plates outward.
e. Tighten strut adapters. Strut should
be centered between axle plates.
Strut can be threaded one way or
the other on strut adapters to cen-
ter the strut after adapters are tight-
ened. Ensure strut is oriented so
that foot tilt pedal is approximately
horizontal when chair is unfolded.
f. Strut should neither be forcing axle
plates outward nor drawing them
inward when tightened. Ensure
proper function of axle plate folding.
g. Cables may need to be adjusted
after repositioning axle sleeve.
NOTE: Axle sleeve spacing may not be
adjusted with drum brake option.
