• Connect the cable of the push rod assembly to
the connection of the drive assembly.
• The push rod assembly is unlocked by pulling
the locking lever (C4) on the right-hand side below
the handle. This allows you to adjust the appliance
ergonomically, correctly or adapt it for transport/
storage. Position the push rod assembly at a right
angle to the drive unit, for example, and release the
adjustment lever so that the unit locks into place.
Replacing the driving disc or floor brush
• Switch the machine off and unplug it from the
power source.
• Tip the machine backwards over its wheels until
the push rod lies on the ground.
• Attach a driving disc or floor brush by setting
it against the planet carrier of the machine and
turning it counterclockwise.
• To replace an attachment, detach it from the
planet carrier by turning it clockwise. Then attach
the new one as described above.
5.4 Operating the machine
5.4.1 Use as a sanding machine
(Floor Tec / Dust Control / Heavy Duty)
• Before you start sanding, it is important that you
give the floor an initial clean to remove coarse dirt.
• Before starting of, always check that no con-
nections have come loose (e.g. whether the cover
plate is firmly screwed to the drive unit).
• Attach the machine to a power supply.
• The machine is ergonomically and correctly
adjusted when the handle unit is approximately
at hip height. This positioning gives you optimum
control of the machine during operation.
• Push both of the power safety switches towards
the middle of the grip and pull the two start levers,
one on each side of the grip, towards you. This will
start the motor and you may begin operating the
machine. Attention! Anticipate a spinning effect
on activation.

• During operation, the machine moves to the left
when you press the handle down slightly and to
the right when you lift the handle slightly. If you
hold the handle in a middle position, the machine
will work in place.
Lowering the push rod/handle bar = movement
to the left
Raising the push rod/handle bar = movement to
the right
• While operating the machine, run the power
cable over your shoulder in order to avoid acciden-
tally running over it with the machine!
• When you release the start levers below the
handle, the machine stops operating immediately.
Attention! Expect deceleration forces.
To transport the machine when it is switched off,
pull the push rod up into a vertical position so that
it locks into place.
• Tip the machine backwards slightly until it is sit-
ting on its wheels. For safety reasons, remove the
attachment/sanding disc to prevent damage.
Connecting the dust extraction ring
Using the dust extraction ring (G) during sanding
work can ensure that as little dust as possible
escapes during work.
• Before attaching the dust extraction ring,
remove the water tank, the water hose, the brush
disc and the additional weight, if these are fitted.
• Tilt the machine 90° onto the handle bar so
that the planet carrier is freely accessible and fit a
sanding disc.
• The dust extraction ring must be inserted from
the front of the cover plate - the two connections
for the suction hoses point towards the wheels.
Ensure that the two hooks on the side are guided
over the cover plate.
• Now set the machine upright again.
• To fit the suction hose, pull the two opposite hoses
out of the T-connector and screw the two individual
hoses onto the suction nozzles of the dust extrac-
tion ring. Note the direction of rotation to the left.
• Then push the two ends back into the T-connec-
tor.
• If necessary, the outlet end of the suction hose
can be connected to the suction hose of an in-
dustrial vacuum cleaner using the pre-assembled
adapter.
• An additional weight can be attached if required.
If you wish to attach a second additional weight,
the two retaining hooks on the side of the dust
extraction ring must first be removed.
5.4.2 Use as a cleaning tool (Clean Tec)
• Before you start working, it is recommended
that you give your floor a quick initial cleaning
and remove any waste that may be lying on the
surface.
• The cleaning liquid supply can be regulated by
pulling upwards on the lever located on the water
tank.
• Allow some cleaning liquid to flow onto the floor
before beginning your cleaning job. Guide the ma-
chine over the liquid, moving it in a spiral pattern.
• Remove dirty cleaning foam from the floor
quickly.
Remove the attachment/brush
disc and clean it after each use.
Fitting a water tank to the ESM 406
• There are two hooks located on the push rod
that are designed both for holding a coiled up
power cord and for attaching a water tank. To
fit the water tank, first loosen the upper bracket
using an Allen key. Now you can hook the retaining
clasp on the underside of the water tank into the
corresponding openings on the lower bracket.
• Hold the water tank in such a way that the clasp
on top of the tank is directly under the opening of
the upper bracket. Now the bracket can be pushed
downwards until the retaining clasp is locked
into place in the bracket. Tighten the screws once
more. Finally, attach the water hose to the nozzle
on the brush cover.
• By carefully loosening and moving the tank, it
can be shifted into a position where the activation
lever for the tank water valve is within comfortable
reach. Once you have done this, be sure to retight-
en the retaining screws.
