3 Patient information

• Do not let foreign particles or liquids enter the Transcarpal Hand.
• The Transcarpal Hand should not be subjected to intense smoke, dust, mechanical vibrations,
shocks or high temperatures.
• Avoid staying near high-tension power lines, transmitters, transformers or other sources of strong
electromagnetic radiation (such as security systems for goods in department stores), as this can
lead to malfunction of the Transcarpal Hand.
• If the hand is not in use, it should be left in the open position to protect the mechanism.
• The Transcarpal Hand and Transcarpal Hand components may be opened or repaired only by
certifed Ottobock Myo-Service technicians.
• Keep the product away from the immediate vicinity of active implantable systems (e.g. pace-
makers, defibrillators etc.) since electromagnetic radiation may cause temporary interference.
• If the distance to HF communication devices (e.g. mobile phones, Bluetooth devices, WiFi
devices) is too small, interference with internal data communications can result in unexpected
prosthesis behaviour. Therefore, keeping the following minimum distances to these HF com-
munication devices is recommended:
• Mobile phone GSM 850/GSM 900: 0.99 m
• Mobile phone GSM 1800/GSM 1900/UMTS: 0.7 m
• DECT cordless phones incl. base station: 0.35 m
• WiFi (routers, access points,...): 0.22 m
• Bluetooth devices (third-party products not approved by Ottobock): 0.22 m
3.1 Driving motor vehicles
Attention:
An upper limb amputee's ability to drive a motor vehicle is determined on a case-by-case
basis. Factors include the type of fitting (amputation level, unilateral or bilateral, residual
limb condition, design of the prosthesis) and the amputee's abilities. Drivers must observe
driving laws applicable in their country. For insurance purposes, we strongly recommend
having your driving ability examined and confirmed by an authorized agency.
For maximum safety and convenience, Ottobock recommends that a specialist evaluate
the need to adapt the vehicle with specialized equipment. It is indispensable that the
user can drive the motor vehicle safely with the Transcarpal Hand switched OFF. Driv-
ing with the Transcarpal Hand switched ON could pose a risk to public traffic in case
of improper control of the Hand.
4 Service
Since all moving parts are subject to some wear and tear, Ottobock recommends yearly service
check-ups by your prosthetist. During the service visit, the entire System Electric Hand will be
inspected and any necessary adjustments or lubrication will be made. Worn-out parts will be
exchanged if necessary.
