The BOOKWALTER
Retractor Kit
Indications
®
The BOOKWAL
TER IMA Retractor Kit (catalog
no. 50-4600) provides the tools to elevate and
retract the sternum for efficient dissection of the
internal mammary artery.
Description
The kit is comprised of the following components,
which also may be purchased separately (Figure 1).
Component
A. Horizontal Bar
B. Post Coupling
C. Table Post
D. IMA Cross Bar
E. IMA Ratchet Mechanism
F. IMA Retractor Blade, 12 inch
G. IMA Storage Case
Note: The Symmetry Surgical BOOKWALTER
IMA T-Cross Bar (catalog no. 50-4675) is available
separately and can be used in place of the IMA
Cross Bar (Figure 2). Please refer to "Attachment
of the T-Cross Bar and Retractor Blades" in this
manual for proper attachment.
Assembly of the system is simple, and the
components are self-contained to make them
easily accountable.
If the instruments are to be used with the
®
BOOKWAL
TER Retractor, refer to the instruction
manual that provides complete operating
instructions and is supplied with the BOOKWAL
Retractor Kit II (catalog no. 50-4542). Extra
copies of this manual are available from
Symmetry Surgical, Antioch, TN 37013 USA.
To obtain extra copies outside the United

WARNINGS
The retractor system can exert a great amount of
force on the wound edges and on tissues. Release
the retractor for short periods of time or shift the
blades to relieve the pressure on any one point.
PRECAUTIONS
Do not tighten the post coupling bolt unless the
coupling is attached to the horizontal bar. The
slight deformity of the circular opening that might
result could affect the smooth fit between the post
coupling and the bars.
If using monopolar electrosurgical equipment while
®
using the BOOKWAL
TER IMA Retractor Kit, consult
the basic rules of usage concerning electrosurgery
(see EN 60601-2-2), as well as the manufacturer's
instructions for use regarding specific warnings
and conditions.
Be sure to electrically isolate the patient from (high
frequency leakage currents to) the operating table,
in accordance with the instructions provided by the
manufacturer of the electrosurgical equipment.
Ensure that the patient does not come into contact
with metal parts that are earthed or that have an
appreciable capacitance to earth (for example:
operating table, supports), in accordance with the
instructions provided by the manufacturer of the
electrosurgical equipment.
Avoid small-area contacts with devices having a
low impedance to earth at high frequencies, as
unwanted burns may result.
Assembly
Attaching the Table Post
1. Pull out the recessed lever, located at the top of
the vertical post (Figures 3 and 4). Turn the lever
counterclockwise to fully open the rail clamp.
Note: Make sure the operating table side rail does
not have extra material draped over it. The clamp
of the table post should not hold more than two
double thicknesses of cotton drape.
2. Attach the clamp over the drapes (Figure 5).
3. Tighten the clamp to secure the post by turning
the lever clockwise.
Attaching the Post Coupling and Horizontal Bar
1. Slide the horizontal bar into either of the holes in
the post coupling.
2. Slide the post coupling and horizontal bar
assembly over the top of the vertical post, to
the desired position, and tighten the coupling
