8 Checking the distiller (OQ)

Once the unit it is properly installed and the operator has acquired the knowledge
to work with it. The unit must be checked.
This process is known as Operation Qualification.
There are four basics checking to do:

8.1 Functional checking

Run this checking after installation and also for some maintenance.
Use MANUAL mode.
8.1.2 Checking the steam generator filling.

On starting the unit for the first time, the water pump starts to refill, automatically,
the steam generator. This operation usually takes around 1 minute and stops auto-
matically. At 15s an alarm sounds and the unit becomes blocked. Stop the unit by
main switch, wait 4s and restart. Repeat this operation 3 or 4 times until the steam
generator is filled.
If, after this 1 minute approx, the operation is not finished, switch the equipment
off. Check that maybe the water tank has no water or that the water has not the
suitable conductivity. (See 4.4)
If so happens, check, empty the steam generator by opening the drain and repeat
the operation.
8.1.3 Checking the ammonia fixative solution
Insert a MACRO tube and an Erlenmeyer under the coolant glassware. Program a
Boric dispense volume. See paragraph 5.
Press «H3BO3», this starts the dispensing pump, it takes liquid from the 2 litres
tank to Erlenmeyer flask. Check, visually that the liquid gets the Erlenmeyer flask.
And the tube outlet is immersed under the Boric surface.
Run this operation when the dispensing tube must primed. If tubing is not primed
the dispensed volume will be wrong.
8.1.4 Checking the NaOH pump and tubing
Insert a MACRO tube. Program a dispense NaOH volume. See paragraph 5.
Press «NaOH», this starts the NaOH dispensing pump, it takes liquid from the 2
litres tank to sample tube. Check, visually that the liquid gets the sample tube.
Run this operation when the dispensing tube must primed. If tubing is not primed
the dispensed volume will be wrong.
8.1.5 Checking distillation «Cleaning»
This operation is often used when working with the PRO-NITRO «S» because it
performs a cleaning of the distillation glassware. It is also used for unit warm-up.
Place a MACRO sample tube, and the Erlenmeyer flask, with near 25ml of distilled
water.
Select MANUAL mode. Press «STEAM», this must starts the steam production and
the coolant water circulation. This is the distillation.
After the warm-up, the distillation rate is between 30 - 40 ml / minute.
Left 5 minutes distilling and then press «STOP» to stop distillation.
