In general, the refractive index of a thicker
transparent substance is higher than a less
thick liquid, it means, the light speed is sma-
ller in a substance with higher density. Then,
if a ray incides in an oblique way on an envi-
ronment with a higher refractive index, it will
be deviated to the normal, whereas if it inci-
des on an environment with a smaller refrac-
tive index, it will move away from it. The rays
that incide on the direction of the normal are
reflected and refracted in the same direction.

5. OPERATION MODE
Take out the instrument from its packing and
remove all protections
Open the prism cover plate (1.2) and clean
both the cover plate and the prism (1.1) with al-
cohol and a fluff-free soft cloth; be very careful
not to scratch the prism surface.
Direct the prism towards a bright light and
adjust the diopter ring (1.5) until the scale is fo-
cused.
To calibrate the instrument put one or two
drops of distilled water or reference sample on
the prism (fig. 7.2) and close the plate.
By turning the scale adjustment screw (1.3)
make the white/blue boundary line match the
value 0 in the scale in case of distilled water, or
the corresponding value in case of a known
concentration reference sample.
Open the plate, clean and wipe the prism and
the plate, and put one or two drops of sample
on the prism; close the plate and looking
through the eyepiece, read the concentration re-
sult on the scale (fig. 7.3).
