Propane Gas Supply Sizing

The vaporization of propane is affected by several
factors: the surface area of the container, the liquid
level of propane, temperature surrounding the
container, and the relative humidity. All of these
factors are specifi c to a site. Therefore, a degree of
experience and judgement is required to select the
proper propane supply.
Although experience is the best guide, the following
recommendations can be used as a starting point.
The table is based on experience in northern
climates where cold weather and high humidity are
prevalent in the winter.
If more or less favorable conditions at a specifi c
site, adjustments can be made on the basis of
experience.
Recommended Propane Gas Supply

If 100 lb. (45 kg) cylinders must be used, provide a mini-
mum of three cylinders per heater.
Be aware that 100 lb. (45 kg) cylinders will not provide the
vapor capacity of large tanks in cold weather, (temperatures
less than 20 °F / - 6.7 °C)
Regardless if using tanks or cylinders, if more than one gas
supply container is used per heater, the containers must be
manifolded together to allow vapor withdrawal simultane-
ously from multiple containers. The manifold system shall
be in accordance with NFPA 58.

Gas Hose and Regulator

(Gas hose and regulator sold separately)
The regulator on the heater takes in a maximum of 13.5
inches W.C. or a minimum 7.0 inches W.C. propane or
natural gas pressures.
If the pressure from the gas supply is higher, then a
regulator MUST be installed at the gas supply to reduce the
pressure.

When using propane gas as the fuel:
1. Lift the propane container's cover.
2. Using pipe thread compound, assemble the bushing,
connector, and regulator as shown. Tighten all con-
nections securely. See Fig. 7, Boss 400DF regulator
shown.

3. Carefully form the connector to ensure the regulator
will be supported, and the tank's valve cover will pro-
tect the regulator from adverse weather conditions.
4. Thread the connector's POL fi tting CCW (counter
clockwise) into the tank valve. Tighten it securely.
5. Open the tank valve.
6. Check all connections with approved leak detectors.
7. Close the tank cover.
8. When storing or transporting the heater, ensure the
connector's fi tting as protected from damage and
dirt entry.
When using natural gas as the fuel
Verify the natural gas supply pressure before installing
the regulator supplied in the heater's accessory pack-
age.
-- DO NOT use the Pigtail connector.
-- The regulator should be used ONLY if the supply
pressure is greater than the maximum inlet pressure
of 13.5 inches W.C. (3.36 kPa).
-- Connect the regulator to the natural gas supply line
using the proper plumbing devices.
