10.2 MEMBRANE CLEANING AND GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

Membranes should be cleaned periodically (regular cleaning of installations at least once
a year), or as indicated, when differential pressure, permeate flow or the pass of salts
(conductivity of permeate) vary by 10 from design values.

The conditions established by the membrane makers must always be respected in order
to not deteriorate or shorten their useful life. The membrane cleaning operation is always
carried out when the equipment is not producing.
The process of membrane cleaning must be carried out in the following stages and
respecting the following considerations:
1. Preparation of cleaning solution:
Cleaning solutions should be prepared with good quality chlorine-free water. The use
of permeate water is recommended. Cleaning chemicals should be added to the water
and ensure that changes in pH and temperature are made gradually. Sometimes the
dirt that needs to be removed requires a chemical solution at a higher water
temperature than the room temperature. The interval frequently oscillates between
15°C and 35°C.
Once again, these practices will be verified with the recommendations of the maker
of the used membrane.
Before pumping the cleaning solution, check the complete mixing and the total
dissolution of the chemicals used.
To calculate the required volume of cleaning solution (and dimensions of the cleaning
system) the number of membranes to be cleaned (pressure box volume) and the
volume of the cleaning circuit must be taken into account.
Usually 1.2 to 1.5 volumes of cleaning solution are used per pressure box volume.
