Carry out a visual inspection of the roller plates, wheels and axles
for damage, malfunction and legibility of their markings in order to
ensure that all moving parts are able to move correctly. Extreme
temperatures and the effects of chemicals such as rust, cracks and
signs of wear and tear can impair the safety of the product. If a check
raises any uncertainties regarding the device's safety, or if a fall from
a height has occurred, the device must be taken out of use
immediately and its further use prevented until a suitably qualified
person has confirmed in writing that it is safe to use. If a repair or the
replacement of parts is required, this must be carried out only by the
manufacturer or an authorised repair specialist (Fig. 3.5). The
lifespan of a reel depends on the extent to which and how it was
used, as well as how it has been maintained, and can be more than
5 years. With prolonged use in harsh conditions, e.g. dust, sand and
mud, the intervals between material checks must be shortened and
the lifespan of the device may also be reduced.
The system must only be used by one person at a time. The product
must be positioned so that the system's freedom of movement and
the fall path are not impaired and it is protected from transverse
and buckling loads. Work as closely as possible to the anchor point
(max. 1.5 m perpendicular to the anchor point viewed in both
directions along the fall edge) in order to avoid injuries from
a swinging fall (fig. 2.6). When this product is used in environments
with caustic chemicals, moving machinery parts, electrical sources
of danger, sharp edges and rough surfaces, extreme care must be
exercised. The rope can become slippery due to moisture and
frost. Equipment should only be used with extreme care under such
conditions. Retractable fall arresters must not be used to protect
people over bulk goods or other similar materials you can sink into
(Fig. 3.6).
Only body harnesses compliant with EN 361:2002, CSA Z259.10,
ANSI/ASSE Z359.1-2007 are approved for use with retractable fall
arresters (Fig. 2.7) (other harnesses are not permitted, Fig. 3.7).
The permissible rated load of each person to be secured is 140 kg
(Fig. 2.8).
The required clearance below the user's feet must be at least 2.1 m
if the anchor point is above the user and the equipment is being
used as a retractable fall arrester. If the Rescue eyelet of the
GORDON Rescue is being used as an anchor point, the instructions
of the equipment being combined with it must also be taken into
account when determining the required clearance below the user.
The device may, in exceptional cases, be used to secure loads of
up to 140 kg. After load securing, a level 2 check must be carried
out. Before this check has taken place, the device must not, under
any circumstances, be used again for personal safety purposes!
Throughout the working process, care must be taken to ensure that
all persons involved are adequately secured against falls from
a height! Particular attention should be paid to the secure closure
of all connectors.
