General notes

The portable and mains-independent battery tester
BAT 121, developed for mobile applications, is used for
load-free testing 12-V start batteries. You can check the
battery both in the vehicle as well as when this is not
installed in the vehicle. The applications foreseen for
the BAT 121 range from the car workshop, MOT testing
stations, petrol stations to the retail battery trade.
Additional functions of the BAT 121 are the Generator-
Test for 12-V alternating- current generators and as a
voltmeter for measuring voltages.
!
The BAT 121 is designed for 12 V starter batteries
only (Pb lug/VRLA). 6 V batteries are classified as
undervoltage; for 24 V batteries an overvoltage is
recognized and the device is automatically switched
off.
i
The battery need not be charged before being
tested. The battery tester must be connected to the
battery terminals.
Battery test preview
The aim of the battery test is to detect starting batte-
ries with significantly reduced starting power before
they break down completely (starting no longer possib-
le) and to have them replaced by a new battery.
Measurement method
The battery tester determines the test data from the
charging state values at any given time (derived from
battery voltage) and starting power. In other words, it
can categorise a discharged battery with low battery
voltage and a starting power of 45 % as being "good"
and another charged battery with a high battery voltage
and a starting power of 75 % as needing to be "Battery
unserviceable".
Starting power
Production tolerances mean that the starting power for
batteries may lie above the stated cold starting current,
i.e. a fully-charged battery could well have a starting
power in excess of 100 %.
