Operation
.1
Starting with a battery in the vehicle
1. Connect the terminal clips on the starter cable
(Fig. 1, Pos. 5) to the vehicle battery, ensuring correct
polarity.
$
Red terminal clip (+) to the positive terminal on
the battery.
$
Black terminal clip (–) to the negative terminal on
the battery.
2. Press the ON/OFF button (Fig. 2, Pos. 2) briefly.
 The BAT 251 is ready when LED 6 lights up green.
i
If LED 7 lights up red, the polarity has been re-
versed. If LED 7 lights up red and LED 8 lights up
yellow, there is no contact with the battery or the
vehicle has no battery.
3. Start the vehicle.
 If the engine starts:
The BAT 251 switches off automatically, the termi-
nal clips ar e de-energized.
 If the engine does not start within 10 s:
The starting process is automatically terminated
after 10 s. A new start attempt can be made after
a waiting time of 5 s.
4. Disconnect the terminal clips on the starter cable
from the vehicle battery
.2
Starting with a defective battery or
no battery in the vehicle (battery
replacement mode)
If the vehicle has
R
a defective battery or
R
no battery or
R
if the vehicle to be started has an electronic immobi-
lizer or an additional starting relay,
it can be started in "battery replacement mode".
i
Every time the BAT 251 is activated, a check is
performed to see if polarity is correct of if a short
circuit has occurred. Therefore, always connect the
terminal pliers before activating BAT 251 .
!
If there is no battery or if the battery voltage is lower
than 1 volt, BAT 251 cannot detect polarity inversal.

1. Connect the terminal pliers on the battery jumper
cables (Fig. 1, Pos. 5) to the vehicle battery or a
suitable place in the vehicle. Ensure the polarity is
correct.
!
Ensure that the terminal pliers cannot cause a short
circuit and are well insulated.
$
Red terminal pliers: (+) plus pole.
$
Black terminal pliers: (–) minus pole.
2. Press the ON/OFF button (Fig. 2, Pos. 2) briefly.
!
If the red LED 7 "No contact with battery" flashes,
the pliers or battery has short-circuited. In this
case, de-activate BAT 251 immediately and correct
the fault (correct the terminal pliers short-circuit;
or replace the battery if it's the battery that short-
circuited). Then proceed with step 1 again.
3. If the red LED 7 and the yellow LED 8 light up, and the
polarity is correct (and only in this case!), briefly press
the battery standby mode button (Fig. 1, Pos. 2).
!
If polarity is inverted, BAT 251 or the electrical
equipment in the vehicle may be destroyed.
 LED 6 lights up green and yellow in alternation.
4. Start the vehicle.
 If the engine starts:
BAT 251 remains activated.
 If the engine does not start within 10 seconds:
The start-assist procedure is automatically aborted.
Wait 5 seconds and try to start the vehicle again.
i
You are advised to de-activate BAT 251 when the
engine is de-activated. If this is not possible, only de-
activate BAT 251 when the engine is idle and equip-
ment (e.g. heated rear windshield) is active. Only
disconnect the battery then.
