6.2 Abseiling options

The force to be applied depends on the weight of the person (including
equipment) and the reduction of the device. The following table provides
an overview of the ideal equipment for your intended use:
Reduction 1:1 (figure A)
Rapid abseiling – the speed of the rope is the same as the abseiling
speed. The reduction ratio is 1:1 in this combination, i.e. the pulling force
is the same as the weight of the person to be roped down.
Reduction 2:1 (figure B)
The reduction is 2:1, which means the roping up and down speed is half as
fast as the rope speed. The pulling force the abseil helper needs to apply
is only half the weight of the person to be roped down.
Reduction 3:1 (figure C))
The reduction is 3:1, which means the roping up and down speed is a
third as fast as the rope speed. The pulling force the abseil helper needs
to apply is only one third of the weight of the person to be roped down.
Reduction 4:1 (figure D)
The reduction is 4:1, which means the roping up and down speed is a
quarter as fast as the rope speed. The pulling force the abseil helper
needs to apply is only one quarter of the weight of the person to be roped
down.
Reduction 5:1 (figure E)
The reduction is 5:1, which means the roping up and down speed is a fifth
as fast as the rope speed. The pulling force the abseil helper needs to
apply is only one fifth of the weight of the person to be roped down.
