characterized by
Temperature without abrupt variations, preferably between 5° to 50°C.
Low relative humidity, possibly below 75%. The temperature of the machine must be kept above dew
point to prevent humidity from condensing in the machine. Any space heaters must be turned on and
their operations must be checked periodically. If the machines are not equipped with space heaters, use
an alternative heating system to avoid any accumulation of condensation in the machine.
A stable support against excessive vibrations and shocks. Place suitable rubber wedges under the feet
of the machine to isolate it whenever vibrations are expected to be too intense.
Ventilated and clean air, free of dust and corrosive gases. Protection from insects and parasites.
Whenever the machine needs to be stored outside, do not leave it in its packaging used during transport, but:
Remove it from its packaging.
Cover it to fully to prevent rain from penetrating and to make sure the machine is well ventilated.
Place it on rigid supports of at least 10mm to prevent it from touching the ground.
Ensure its ventilation. If the machine is left in the packing used for transport (in case of a crate),
holes/openings must be performed and be large enough to ensure ventilation.
Protect it from insects and parasites.
4.2 Long-term storage (more than two months)
The following instructions must be implemented in addition to the measures applied for short-term storage:
Measure the insulation resistance of the windings and their relevant temperature (quarterly, see Chapter
5.1).
Check the conditions of the painted surfaces every six months and, in case of corrosion, remove the
paint and restore it.
Check the conditions of the anti-corrosion paint on the bare metal surfaces (such as on the end of the
shaft) every six months and, in case of corrosion, remove it with an emery cloth and re-apply the anti-
corrosion treatment.
Bearings lubricated with grease
The bearings lubricated with grease do not require maintenance during storage; the periodic rotation of the shaft
will help prevent corrosion from contact and the grease from hardening
For storage periods longer than 3 months, carry out a 5 shaft rotations every 3 months, stopping at 90° compared to
the initial starting position.
If stored for a long period of time in a damp room, dry the windings before commissioning the machine.
The roller bearings do not require maintenance during storage; the periodic rotation of the shaft will help prevent corrosion
from contact and the grease from hardening.

5. INSTALLATION AND COMMISSIONING

Preliminary checks
Before installation:
make sure that the data on the plate of the generator corresponds to the system's features
clean any protective coating from the coupling surfaces, such as the joints and flanges (and the shaft
extension for the double bearing generators).
The single bearing generators are shipped with a blocking bracket between joint and fitting.
Remove the bracket before installation.
The alternator must be installed in a sufficiently large room whose air can be directly exchanged with the
atmosphere.
The air inlets and outlets must not be obstructed and they must be positioned as to avoid direct intake of hot air.
Plan for the possibility to carry out inspections and maintenance work during operation.

5.1 Insulation test

5.1.1 Measuring the insulation resistances
If the alternator has remained inactive for a long period of time (more than one month), a ground mass insulation
test on the main stator windings is highly recommended before commissioning at the manufacturer of the units
plant. More detailed instructions are provided in international IEEE standard 43-2000.
