GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this Universal Safe Escape Respirator
Trainer is for the user to become familiar with the donning,
wearing, and doffing of the Universal Safe Escape
Respirator.
The Universal Safe Escape Respirator is a single size res-
pirator. Although the respirator can accommodate a wide
range of facial sizes, it is essential that a neck size check
be performed before using the respirator (see Size
Selection and Training section).
In the event that the actual Universal Safe Escape
Respirator is deployed, the Universal Safe Escape
Respirator is NIOSH approved for respiratory protection
during escape for up to 15 minutes from CBRN
(Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) agents.
Inhaled air is drawn through the canister, which contains
adsorbents and a filter that removes or neutralizes specif-
ic contaminants. Exhaled air leaves the facepiece through
the exhalation valve.
The trainer respirator is recommended to supplement the
training presentation and to familiarize the user with the
fitting procedure and operation of the respirator. Review
the instructions and training presentation periodically.
SIZE SELECTION AND TRAINING
Although the respirator can accommodate a wide range of
facial sizes, it is essential that a neck size check be per-
formed before using the respirator.
Neck Size Check
1. Using a flexible tape measure, measure the distance
(circumference) around the neck.
2. Ensure the tape measure is taut around the back of
the neck and positioned just under the Adam's apple.
a. Neck size must be 305 millimeters (12 inches) or
greater.
b. If neck size is less than 305 millimeters (12 inches)
then another form of respiratory protection must be
used.

DONNING
When using the Universal Safe Escape Respirator, the
neck size measurement must be GREATER than 305
millimeters (12 inches) in circumference. Failure to fol-
low this warning can result in serious personal injury
or death.
Before Donning
•
Remove all jewelry (earrings, necklaces, rings) or other
items that could damage the respirator while donning
and wearing.
•
Ensure zippers or other garment objects do not inter-
fere with donning and wearing.
•
Perform a visual inspection of the trainer for signs of
wear or damage. If the hood material or components
are torn or cracked, do not use and replace the trainer.
•
If the harness snaps are disengaged, engage.
Note: Sharp edges on jewelry or zippers may cause tear-
ing of the hood material.
Donning
1. Remove the trainer from the carton and drawstring
bag.
2. Thread the canister securely onto the hood assembly.
Note: For training purposes only, the training canister is
threaded onto the hood assembly. The actual Universal
Safe Escape Respirator comes with the canister perma-
nently attached.
3. Secure excess hair by using a hairtie (provided on the
outside of the bag). This will help to eliminate the
potential of long hair interfering with neck seal.
4. Unfold the Universal
Safe Escape Respirator
Trainer and insert both
hands into the elastic
harness.
