GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Universal Safe Escape Respirator is NIOSH approved
for respiratory protection during escape for up to 15 min-
utes from CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and
Nuclear) agents. Inhaled air is drawn through the canister,
which contains adsorbents and a filter that removes or
neutralizes specific contaminants. Exhaled air leaves the
facepiece through the exhalation valve.
SIZING
The Universal Safe Escape Respirator is a single size res-
pirator. Although the respirator can accommodate a wide
range of facial sizes, it is essential that a neck size check
be performed before using the respirator.
Neck Size Check
1. Using a flexible tape measure, measure the distance
(circumference) around the neck.
2. Ensure the tape measure is taut around the back of
the neck and positioned just under the Adam's apple.
a. Neck size must be 305 millimeters (12 inches) or
greater.
b. If neck size is less than 305 millimeters (12 inches)
then another form of respiratory protection must be
used.
The neck size measurement must be GREATER than
305 millimeters (12 inches) in circumference. Failure to
follow this warning can result in serious personal
injury or death.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
TRAINING
It is important for the user to become familiar with the
application and operation of the Universal Safe Escape
Respirator. The tools to assist with this training include the
Safe Escape Respirator User's Instruction, DVD training
video (P/N 10073973), and Safe Escape Training Hood
(P/N 10073703) and Canister (P/N 10057496).
Before using the Universal Safe Escape Respirator, the
user must view the presentation video to obtain the nec-
essary instructions and to become familiar with the opera-
tion of the hood. Since the Universal Safe Escape
Respirator must not be deployed until an actual escape
situation, an optional training respirator is available. The
trainer respirator is recommended to supplement the
training presentation and to familiarize the user with the
donning procedure and operation of the respirator. Review
the instructions and training presentation periodically.
Preparations for Use
Sharp edges on jewelry or zippers may cause tearing
of the hood material.
5

items that could damage respirator while donning and
wearing.
Ensure zippers or other garment objects do not inter-
fere with donning.

applicable.
