10. Once you have located the exact placement
of the studs, use the sheetrock saw to cut
from the left top side down toward the bottom.
Cut using the stud as a guide against the saw
blade. Do the same for the right side. Remove
the resulting panel of sheetrock and discard.
11. Remove any insulation within the rough
opening. Use the measuring tape to
measure the space between the studs. The
metal pan will not fit if the space between
the studs is not 16" center-to-center. If the
measurement is 14-1/4" to 14-3/4", you may
proceed. If the measurement is not within
this range OR if there is any form of damage
to the studs (water, termite, or general rot)
you may have to add a stud or replace the
damaged one.
12. Use a hammer to test the connection of the
studs to the sill and floor track (see diagram
on page 5). Give the studs a solid hit with the
hammer near the top and bottom. If there is
any movement, secure the studs with 16 #
nails. It is imperative that the studs are well
secured for safe and proper installation of
the ladder.
