7 .
To detect possible obstacles in the wall
before cutting the large hole for the pan,
cut out the small 4" X 4" hole you just
marked. Use the sheetrock saw and begin
cutting slowly at the center of the top line to
the right and then left corners.
Do the same for the other three sides.
Remove the resulting piece of sheetrock.
8.
Use your flashlight to move the insulation and
look inside the hole to make certain there are
no obstacles in the wall. If no obstacles are
visible, use a level or other straight edge to
connect the marks you made in step 6 to
indicate the top and bottom lines you will cut
next. This forms the outline required to cut out
the remaining sheetrock to make way for the
metal pan. Use the level to draw the lines.
9.
If the studs are 16"-on-center use the
sheetrock saw and begin cutting in the middle
of the top line. Cut to the right until you reach
the stud. STOP when you feel the blade hit
the stud. Next, on the same line, cut to the left
until you reach the stud on that side. Repeat
the same steps for the bottom line.
If the studs are NOT 16"-on-center, you
need to determine whether the stud(s) need
to be replaced. Also, you should not cut more
than 14 ½" horizontally. You can use one stud
as a guide for placement of the second.
