6. MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING

Hand refractometers need the same main-
tenance as any other optical instrument. They
must be always clean and they have to be pla-
ced in its box to avoid dust settle on them.
Take into account the following advices:
Never dismatle the lenses; if there is any
dust or dirtiness on the external surface of
lenses wipe them with a fluff-free cloth.
To remove dust settled on lenses blow it up
with a pear or clean in with a soft brush.
Dry immediately the optical parts in case
they get wet.
Never elt the optical parts wet
If they come into contact with acid or basic
substances, clean them immediately with
water and then dry.
For the cleaning of mechanical pieces use
non-corrosive lubricants, being careful not to
touch the optical pieces.
Be careful not to knock the instrument or
scratch the surface of the prism.
