ELECTRICAL TRANSIENTS

The transient is an electrical interference that overlaps to an ordinary sensor/actuator
signal or to a connection to the ground.
The transients can cause more or less serious malfunctions and can be caused by:
Weak oscilloscope connections;
Weak, oxidised, or damaged cables/connectors on the vehicle system;
Defective sensors/actuators;
Oxidised, partially or completely interrupted connections to the ground on the
vehicle system.
In order to detect transients and defects on the ground:
Connect the oscilloscope ground to the negative pole of the battery;
Subsequently connect the oscilloscope channel to the ground points that are likely
to be defective.
Such a connection, when there is no problem, enables to display the signal on the
oscilloscope near to the 0 and without big transients.
In case different signals are detected, it is necessary to check the conditions of the
connections and of the ground cables from the battery to the measuring point.
