Clean the filter as described below.

Re-fit the cover (5), taking care that the hook (34) clicks
x
back in place.
Re-insert the container into the appliance until the clip
x
(32) engages.
Cleaning
Warning! Before cleaning and maintenance, switch the
appliance off and unplug it.
From time to time wipe the appliance with a damp cloth.
x
Do not use any abrasive or solvent-based cleaner. Do not
immerse the appliance in water.
Cleaning the container filter (fig. L - O)
The container filter prevents dust and dirt from entering the
motor housing. The filter is re-usable and should be cleaned
regularly.
Remove the container from the appliance (fig. L).
x
Remove the cover (5) from the container (31) (fig. M).
x
Pull the filter (35) off the filter holder (36) (fig. N).
x
Shake off excess dust by tapping the filter into a dustbin.
x
Gently clean the folds of the filter (35) using the brush (14)
x
(fig. O).
Warning! Do not brush or use compressed air to clean the
filter.
Depending on its condition, rinse the outside of the filter
x
with water. Allow the filter to dry for 24 hours before re-
inserting it.
Warning! Do not wash the inside of the filter.
Replace the filter.
x
Re-fit the cover.
x
Re-insert the container into the appliance.
x
Cleaning the motor filter (fig. L & P)
The motor filter prevents particles and larger objects from
entering the motor housing when the container is removed.
The filter is re-usable and should be cleaned regularly.
Remove the container from the appliance (fig. L).

Take the filter (37) out (fig. P).
x
Brush any loose dust off the filter.
x
Replace the filter.
x
Re-insert the container into the appliance.
x
Replacing the filters (fig. L - Q)
If the container filter is damaged or fails to operate properly,
it must be replaced. When replacing the container filter,
the motor filter and the outlet filters have to be replaced as
well. Replacement filter sets are available from your
Black & Decker dealer (cat. no. VLF10).

Replacing the container filter (fig. L - N)
Proceed as described above to replace the filter (35).

Replacing the motor filter (fig. L & P)
Proceed as described above to replace the filter (37).

Replacing the outlet filters (fig. Q & R)
Open the cover (38).
x
Remove the old filters (39).
x
Insert the new filters as shown.
x
Close the cover.
x
VL2040 - Replacing the charcoal filter
The charcoal filter removes odours and smoke from the air
exiting the motor housing. The filter should be replaced every
6 to 9 months and whenever worn or damaged. Replacement
filters are available from your Black & Decker dealer
(cat. no. VBF40).
Proceed as described above to replace the filter (40).

Mains plug replacement (U.K. & Ireland only)
If a new mains plug needs to be fitted:
Safely dispose of the old plug.

Connect the brown lead to the live terminal in the new plug.
x
Connect the blue lead to the neutral terminal.
x
Warning! No connection is to be made to the earth terminal.
Follow the fitting instructions supplied with good quality
plugs. Recommended fuse: 13 A.

Protecting the environment

Separate collection. This product must not be
disposed of with normal household waste.
Should you find one day that your Black & Decker product
needs replacement, or if it is of no further use to you, do not
dispose of it with household waste. Make this product
available for separate collection.
Separate collection of used products and packaging
allows materials to be recycled and used again.
Re-use of recycled materials helps prevent
environmental pollution and reduces the demand for
raw materials.
Local regulations may provide for separate collection of
electrical products from the household, at municipal waste
sites or by the retailer when you purchase a new product.
