Intended use
The stair gauge is designed for home and hobby use. It is particularly helpful for refurbishing stairs and fitting
new step and stair covers. It is a template and contour gauge for recording and transferring a shape
and contour. It is used for measuring, marking and transferring angles to a workpiece (e.g. step, cabinet
and furniture making).
Assembly and instructions
The stair gauge lets you create a template for a number of different steps. In these assembly instructions
we will limit ourselves to the basic functions.
Check that the contents as illustrated are complete (Figure 1).
Assemble the metal rails as illustrated. Assemble and tighten the illustrated six stops. The six stops serve as
front stops or to create expansion joints. Place the stair gauge on the tread and align it. Then tighten the wing
nuts. Remove the stair gauge and fit it on the workpiece using the stops. Mark the contour. The contour line
can be sawn out (Figures 2.1 to 2.5).
The two adjustable stops are used to create step nosing profiles or for overhanging step nosings.
Assemble the stair gauge, then place it on the tread and align and tighten it. Remove the stair gauge and
set the material thickness of the nosing profile or overhang. Mark the contour. The contour line can be sawn
out (Figures 3.1 to 3.2).
To create steps with risers, assemble the stair gauge using the adjustable stops as illustrated. Set the riser
thickness at the adjustable stops (Figures 4.1 to 4.2).
The two measuring tips can optionally be assembled for very acute angles (Figures 5.1 to 5.2).
Curves can be created using the flexible chain link. Offer up the chain link to the curve and assemble
the chain link as shown. Mark the contour. The contour line can be sawn out (Figures 6.1 to 6.2).
