- the ground wire isn't interrupted by a pro-
tective device against electric shock.
- the main switch is in the OFF "O" position.
• Connect all the metal parts which are near
the operator in the welding location by using
cables bigger or of the same cross section of
the welding cable to a ground terminal;
• The power source has a protection level IP
22S; therefore, it prevents:
- any manual contact with hot or moving in-
ternal parts;
- the insertion of any solid body with more
than 12mm diameter;
- protected against vertically falling drops
of water (condensation) with inclination max
of 15°.
2.5 FIRE PREVENTION
• The working area should conform to the
Safety Regulations, and therefore, fire extin-
guishers should be provided in the area and
walls, ensure extinguishers are suitable for
the fire that may be kindled.
• Ceiling and floor should be non-flammable.
• All combustible material must be moved
from the welding area (Fig. 10). If combu-
stibles cannot be moved, they must be pro-
tected with fire-resistant cover.
• Ventilate potentially flammable atmosphe-
res before welding. Never operate in an at-
mosphere which contains heavy concentra-
tions of dust, flammable gas or combustible
liquid vapour.
• The power source must be located in a
safe area with a firm and flat floor; it should
not be put against a wall.
• Do not weld containers in which fuel, lubri-
cant or any other flammable material have
been stored.
• Do not use welder to thaw frozen pipes.
• Do not weld close to a pipeline of ventila-
tion, a gas line, and any installation capable
of spreading the fire rapidly.
• After having completed your work, always
6
check that the area is free of glowing or smol-
dering material.
• Ensure there is a earth good contact; a
bad contact may generate an electric arc and
cause fire.
2.6 SHIELDING GAS
Carefully follow the recommendations for use
and handling of gas cylinders from the supplier.
• Locate and store the cylinder in a open and
ventilated area, as far as possible from the
working area and from heat sources.
• Secure cylinders with a steel chain so that
they cannot be knocked over.
• Protect the cylinder, especially the valve,
from bumps, falls, falling objects and weather.
• Do not attempt to lubricate a regulator or
the cylinder valves.
• Purge the cylinder valves before connec-
tion the regulator.
• Adjust the pressure properly according to
the welding process.
• Periodically check fittings and pipes.
• Do not attempt to find a gas leak with a fla-
me, use a suitable detector or soapy water
with a brush.
Bad or improper conditions of use of gas,
especially in confined spaces (the hold of
ships, tanks, silos, etc..) expose the user to
the following hazards:
- asphyxiation or poisoning by gases and
gas mixtures containing less than 20% of
CO2, (these gases replace oxygen in the air);
- fire and explosion with gas mixtures con-
taining hydrogen (it is a light and flammable
gas, accumulates under the ceiling or in the
cavity with the danger of fire and explosion).

2.7 NOISE
Noise level depends on the current intensity,
on the welding process and on the working
location. Under normal circumstances the
equipment used for electric arc welding does
not exceed the permitted 80 dBA. However
in certain conditions eg. high welding para-
meters in confined spaces, noise levels may
exceed the permitted level. For this reason
it is strongly recommended that operatives
wear appropriate ear protection.
2.8 EMERGENCY FIRST AID
First aid facilities and a qualified first aid per-
son should be available for each shift for im-
mediate treatment of electrical shock victims.
The workplace must be equipped with the
