16. Keep hands clear of the cutter area. Do
not reach past the cutter to clear parts or scrap
with the shaper running. Avoid awkward oper-
ations and hand positions where a sudden slip
could cause your hand to contact the cutter.
17. Do not attempt to shape boards with loose
knots or with nails or other foreign material,
on its surface.
Do not attempt to shape twisted, warped,
bowed or "in wind" stock unless one edge
has been jointed for guiding purposes prior to
shaping.
18. Do not attempt to shape long or wide
boards unsupported where spring or weight
could cause the board to shift position.
19. Always use safety devices for all operations
where they can be used.
20. Be sure to check the direction of spindle ro-
tation before use.
21. Turn off the machine before cleaning. Use
a brush or compressed air to remove chips or
debris — do not use your hands.
22. Do not stand on the machine. Serious injury
could occur if the machine tips over.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Arbor. A shaft, driven by the shaper motor that
tums the cutting tools.
Collet. The sleeve that grips the shank of a
router bit.
Feather board. A piece of wood with thin fin-
gers that hold a board against a fence or down
against the table.
Fence. A straight guide used to keep a board a
set distance from the cutter head.
Kickback. When a work piece is thrown back,
in the opposite direction the cutter is turning.
Miter gauge. A tool that slides in a slot on the
table, a miter gauge can be adjusted to differ-
ent angles and is used to slide the stock past
the cutter head.
Pitch. A sticky sap based residue that comes
from wood products.
Runout. The amount of wobble in the spindle.
Template. A pattem to guide the marking or
cutting of a shape.

ADDITIONAL WARNINGS

Exposure to the dust created by power sand-
ing, sawing, grinding, drilling and other con-
struction activities may cause serious and per-

manent respiratory or other injury, including
silicosis (a serious lung disease), cancer, and
death. Avoid breathing the dust, and avoid
prolonged contact with dust. The dust may
contain chemicals known to the State of Cali-
fornia to cause cancer, birth defects or other
reproductive harm.
2. ALWAYS wear eye protection. Any machine
can throw debris into the eyes during opera-
tions, which could cause severe and permanent
eye damage. Everyday eyeglasses are NOT safe-
ty glasses. ALWAYS wear Safety Goggles (that
comply with ANSI standard Z87.1) when oper-
ating power tools.
Some examples of these chemicals are:
• Lead from lead-based paints.
• Crystalline silica from bricks, cement and oth-
er masonry products.
• Arsenic and chromium from chemically-treat-
ed lumber.
Always operate tool in well ventilated area and
provide for proper dust removal. Use a dust
collection system along with an air filtration
system whenever possible. Always use properly
fitting NIOSH/OSHA approved respiratory pro-
tection appropriate for the dust exposure, and
wash exposed areas with soap and water.
