Stitch
Selected stitch

Smocking
is a delicate
decorative
treatment
on
childlen's
clothes
or women's
blouses.
Choose
a soft, lightweight
fabric
such as batiste,
gingham
or challis,,
Cut the fabric three times wider than the finished
width,
Set the stitch
length
at "4,,5 " and sew rows of
straight
gathering
stitches
1 cm (3/8") apart across
the area to be smocked.
Note:
Loosen
the needle thread
tension
to make
gathering
easier.
Knot the threads
along the edge.
Pull the bobbin
threads
to distribute
the gathers
evenly and secure the threads.,
Sew the decorative
stitches
of your choice
between
the gathered
rows°
Remove
the gathering
stitches.

Shell Stitch
C) Selected stitch

(_ Thread tension
Use a lightweight
fabric such as tricot.
Fold and stitch on the bias_
Set the stitch width and length
as you desire°
You may need to tighten
the top thread
slightly.
Allow the needle to just clear the folded
edge of the
fabric when it zigzags_
If you sew rows of shell stitches,
space the rows 1 o5
cm (5/8") apart. You can sew shell stitches
on knits
or soft silky wovens
in any direction,.
