7. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
7.1 What is blood pressure?
Pressure measures the action of the force exerted by blood on the walls of blood vessels. Systolic
or maximum pressure indicates the maximum force exerted against the vessel walls during cardiac
contraction. DIASTOLIC or minimum pressure indicates the force exerted on the vessels during
cardiac relaxation.It is measured in mmHg (millimetres of mercury).
It is necessary to know that an individual's blood pressure fluctuates greatly and depends on many
factors. It is generally lower in summer and higher in winter. Pressure can vary with atmospheric
pressure and is greatly influenced by physical loads, emotional excitability, stress, meals,
medication, alcohol, smoking, age, etc. It is recommended to note down your daily measurements
