• The belt tensioner roller has two holes in
which the two pins of the Double-Pin
Wrenches 2587, 2587-1 or 2587-2 are inser-
ted allowing them to turn the belt tensioner
roller and to tension the timing belt.

2588-1 Crankshaft Fixing Device
• The crankshaft is turned clockwise until
timing marks align. Then the crankshaft gear
is locked in this position with the Crankshaft
Fixing Device 2588-1. Push the tool from the
front face of the crankshaft gear into the
gear teeth so that the pin of the Crankshaft
Fixing Device 2588-1 fits into the hole in the
oil seal housing.

CAUTION:
The timing mark "arrow" on the Crankshaft
Fixing Device 2588-1 must align with the
mark
on
Temporarily remove the plastic knob
off the tool to improve visibility of the
mark.
Maintenance work on engines must be carried out only by
experienced mechanics. Always wear personal protective equipment.

Camshaft Timing / Locking
Alignment of camshaft timing marks
• The mark on the camshaft sprocket (located
behind the sprocket teeth ) must align with
the marking on the casting "3Z" (left) for 3
cylinder engines or "4Z" (right) for 4 cylin-
der unit injection (Pumpe Düse) engines.
Lock the camshaft in this position by inser-
ting the Locking Pin 2588-3 through the
elongated slot on the left-hand side of the
camshaft sprocket. Having located the
locking tools in position, the belt tension can
be released and the old timing belt can be
removed.
• The 3 bolts of the sprocket can be slacke-
ned allowing the sprocket to move.
Timing Belt Tensioning
CAUTION:
Up to 2002, vehicles with unit injec-
tion (Pumpe Düse) diesel engines
have been equipped with a hydraulic
belt tensioner. Since 2002 most of
the unit injection (Pumpe Düse) engines
have changed to a mechanical tensioner.

CAUTION :
Belt tension adjustment must only be
carried out when the engine is cold.

2588-2 Locking Plate
• Insert a suitable hex head wrench into the
tensioner roller's hexagon and turn until the

Plate
inserted, then release the tension off the
timing belt.

Double-Pin Wrench 2587-1
• Locate Double-Pin Wrench 2587-1 into the
two holes in the tensioner roller.
• Turn 2587-1 clockwise, until pointer (1)
comes to a stop at position (2).
• Install the tensioner device and fit new
timing belt.
• Ensure camshaft sprocket is in position
within the elongated slots.
