10.8: Using Joey
Once the infant is securely positioned, give them some time to
adjust to their new environment.
At the start, the adult can place the back of their hand behind the
soles of the infant's feet, (horizontally) to help them push off. You can
also place the palms of the infant's hands flat each time they take a
step forward, to encourage weight-bearing through the arms.
The product is designed to encourage the natural development
of reciprocal crawling movement (left leg, right arm, or right leg,
left arm). Therefore, we advise you alternate your hand behind the
infant, one foot at a time, until the infant begins to learn and initiate
this movement independently.
During the session
The adult can stand at the other end of the mat to encourage the
infant to move forward (alternate the adult's position on the left and
right side for infants with a head turning preference, to encourage
rotation of the head).
You can also suggest toys to catch their attention and encourage
forward movement.
Make sure the infant can comfortably turn their head to the side
during training.
NB: It is common for the infant to cry when moving, especially
before the age of 2 months due to the effort of moving.
If the infant shows signs of fatigue or genuine upset, you should
remove the infant and try again later.
Duration of training
A session of 5 minutes per day is recommended in the first sessions.
If well tolerated, the session can be extended to 10 minutes per day
(2x 5-minute sessions). Rest breaks are encouraged.
Some infants may extend the use of product beyond 6-months,
depending on their disabilty, condition or growth. You can continue
to use the product until they outgrow this size.
